About this deal

By shining a spotlight on supplementary characters’ preconceptions and showing their progression towards change and acceptance, my class were able to connect with the injustices faced by refugees, both in the past and the present, on a far deeper level.

Letters from the Lighthouse - LoveReading4Kids

While in Devon, Olive begins to unravel the mystery and finds out that her sister is more connected to Devon than she realized. Olive is a brave heroine and there's a good twist towards the end that even the most wily readers won't see coming. Your children will be asked to step into the shoes of different characters and give statements from their perspective. My favourite character is Esther because she stands up to the most fierce, and even if she was a bully, that's changed now!My main critique is that the pace of the book seems to soar at some points meaning particular sections feel rushed. A main focus of the story is the growing friendship between Olive and a Jewish refugee named Esther. The novel explores themes of courage, resilience, and friendship, as well as the lasting impact of war on ordinary people’s lives.

I would highly recommend this book to a person who likes adventures and mysteries, and unexpected endings. Carroll has written wonderful characters, a realistic plot where the kids can make significant contributions to the war effort without it being unrealistic, and added just enough of the hard stuff so as not to negate the horror of war or overburden kids with it either. Olive and her brother have been evacuated to Devon, but her older sister Sukie is still missing from the night of the bombs. Although she is sometimes scared, Molly is determined to protect Pearl and discovers that the lighthouse holds a long-buried secret that could change her life forever. The Vocabu-Library resource from Vocabulary Ninja is a comprehensive vocabulary resource designed to unpick and explain the vocabulary found within classic and modern children’s literature. The book is packed with mystery and suspense which made me want to read it as I love mystery and history books. When Olive is caught in an air raid, her mum decides that it is time her children were evacuated out of London and she is sent, with her brother, Cliff, to live in a small coastal village in Devon. Their father has been killed, their mother appears to be sinking under her grief and their older sister has gone missing after a bombing raid. My favourite scene is when Esther and Olive go into the school and everyone unpicked the stars that had Jew in German on them.

This resource features large display letters which are perfect as the backdrop for a display about lighthouses as part of a Seaside topic. Perfect for creating a topic hook to start a seaside topic or for a 'Wow' activity to excite and enthuse children! There, Olive has to solve a mystery of her own: a strange coded letter holding very important information which seems to link her sister (Sukie) with Devon and to something important and impossibly dangerous. I would definitely recommend this for UKS2 to really get to the heart of some really challenging and emotive issues. Olive also shows substantial resilience and determination throughout the book, making her a wonderful, relatable role model for children. This would make an excellent companion read to school lessons on war-time evacuees, although it is a definite read for pleasure.
