You can also find the North Star by locating the tip of the Little Dipper’s handle, but this asterism can be difficult to find in the city. The Little Dipper is often referred to as the “ Host of the North Star“. The North Star has been used as a metaphor in several poems and history plays. The most popular is William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. In Act III, Scene I of the play, Caesar says that he is as constant as the northern star. However, scholars suggest that Caesar, who ruled in the first century BCE, would have never seen the North Star as fixed, and those poetic lines are just an astronomical anachronism. In antiquity, Polaris was not yet the closest naked-eye star to the celestial pole, and the entire constellation of Ursa Minor was used for navigation rather than any single star. Polaris moved close enough to the pole to be the closest naked-eye star, even though still at a distance of several degrees, in the early medieval period, and numerous names referring to this characteristic as polar star have been in use since the medieval period.
