About this deal

White vinegar contains natural acetic acid, which will readily dissolve calcium carbonate and other minerals.

Since 2007, Essex-based Bilt Hamber has quietly established itself as a car care tour de force, formulating home-grown – and frequently class-leading – products that are often tremendous value for money too. Auto-wheel is a case in point. Three cleaners in this group test pip the rest, and Auto-wheel is the best all-rounder of the lot. The safe, pH-neutral brew is a doddle to use: spray it on, wait until it turns red, then rinse off and dry. Its brake-dust-removing power has to be seen to be believed, and agitation simply wasn’t required on our test wheels. We used Clean Wheels on Jaguar Magazine’s XJS. A great car, true, but one with utterly filthy alloys! While there are indeed alloys with certain coatings and finishes that cannot be used in conjunction with AWCs (see below), the majority are fine. Advances made in the field of alloy wheel coatings and lacquers mean that almost all mainstream wheels are more than capable of shrugging off acid wheel treatments, and this is particularly true of more sophisticated cleaning solutions, our own Clean Wheels being a case in point. Absolutely amazing product. This stuff is hands-down the best wheel/brakes/suspension cleaner out there that is 100 percent safe for all finishes and waxes/sealants.” – Thumper Acid wheel cleaners, in my opinion, should only ever be used as a last resort if there is heavy stains on the alloy wheels that you can not remove by other means. They are so aggressive that using them on well maintained wheels is not something that is recommended, nor required.

Mirror Bright Wheel Cleaner

Spray your body panel generously and leave it to sit for a couple of minutes so that it can penetrate deep down and dissolve the mineral deposits. Then, wipe it away with a clean microfiber towel. This product, in my experience, takes a lot of the ‘elbow’ out of the ‘elbow grease’ equation. Just spray on the wheels and let it do all the work.” – RtDK Acid Wheel Cleaners (AWCs) have been a fixture of the detailing landscape for decades. Prized for their versatility and ability to break down even the toughest of baked on brake dust and other deposits, AWCs have nonetheless come in for some negative press of late, with various sections of the internet calling for them to be all but abandoned in favour of less effective, differently formulated alternatives. The fact that they’re made of a corrosive substance ensures that all acid-based wheel treatments should be treated with respect, but, when used carefully and correctly, they’re a valuable tool in the battle to keep your alloys looking flawless. Clean wheels are, in our opinion, the most important finisher to get your classic car looking smart and well looked after. No point cleaning it at all if you’re not going to get the wheels sparkling; it’s like cleaning the house and then not vacuuming the carpet. Adam’s Polishes (left side of tire pictured below) performed similarly to Turtle Wax and Meguiar’s. While it didn’t quite beat out Turtle Wax in a matchup, it was a close comparison. This is one of the few sprays that experienced color changing as it worked, which is a handy indicator of when it’s time to wash the cleaner off.

Not all alloy wheels are safe to use with Acid Wheel Cleaners, with those with an anodised or chromed coating, or those with a diamond cut being key examples. This is seriously the greatest stuff. I use a regular tire cleaner that they offer at the car washing place I go to, and it’s OK, but this stuff works almost instantly. You can see the rust and dirt just come out.” – Holly & NicoleMuch as some of us car-cleaning nerds may consider that sort of job to be valuable ‘me time’, we still expect a good wheel cleaner to take the manual labour out of the job where possible. We compared the foaming Turtle Wax T-18 wheel cleaner head-to-head with Meguiar’s and Adam’s Polishes wheel cleaners. In both tests, Turtle Wax T-18 removed noticeably more caked-in dirt from the wheel than the competitors. One feature of Adam’s Polishes that stood out is the odor, which was much stronger than the other wheel cleaners we tested. It smells very strongly of artificial cherry – not a terrible smell but something some consumers may find unpleasant. Adam’s Polishes] wheel cleaner is good enough to react with the iron particles on the caliper and loosen them to the point it can be sprayed right off, with little to no agitation only if you use a pressure washer with a 40-or-less degree nozzle.” –Bilal F. We’ve been developing, formulating, selling and using AWCs for decades now, long enough to know a huge amount about them, and long enough to be in the position to impart some advice on the subject. With this in mind, please take the time to read through the following article; Acid Wheel Cleaners 101 – The Complete Guide To Acid Wheel Cleaning Products

This was the second most effective tire cleaner we tested (left side of tire pictured below). It didn’t work quite as well as the Turtle Wax (right side), but this foaming wheel cleaner appeared to remove grime better than any of the other cleaners. Much like the Halfordscleaner, the CarPlan product uses alkaline action to get your wheels shining, but you need to get a bit more hands-on, because it doesn’t melt away the dirt quite as easily. Perhaps the bigger issue with this cleaner is that it feels a bit too dry. So we added some water (even though the instructions don’t specifyto do so),which made the process easier and more effective. It's not the best cleaner here, but it's still effective enough and good value.

Keeping your car exterior clean is a great way to take care of the aesthetic of your car as well as its longevity. Follow our step by step guide. When it comes to cleaning wheels, one of the biggest questions is if it’s safe to use acid wheel cleaners. First off, let’s discuss what an acid wheel cleaner is. These are cleaners that are between pH 1-5, with alkaline cleaners being in the range of pH 9-13 and those in the middle (such as car shampoo) being classed as pH neutral. Some wheels are prone to rotting and corrosion and there are a number of ways to treat this. Some companies ‘shot blast’ or ‘sand blast’ wheels to remove all the paint and corrosion. If you ever found yourself to be in this situation, then the best course of action would be to rinse it thoroughly and also counteract the low pH by using a pH neutral shampoo on the wheel. This should raise the pH of the area, thereby limit the damage caused. What are the alternatives to acid wheels cleaners? We tested the wheel cleaners head-to-head on the same tire, applying each product to half of the wheel for a direct comparison. After each test, it was easy to compare cleaner performance side-by-side.
