In the Geekbench 5 single and multi-core CPU tests, the Moto G9 Power gains a small lead on its predecessor, the Moto G8 Power and outperforms the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 in multi-core processing, as well as the more expensive Galaxy M31. It isn’t quite as good as the Realme 6 in these tests, but the differences between the two won’t really be noticeable for the vast majority of Android users. The two other display modes on offer – “Saturated” and “Boosted” – tinker with the vibrancy of certain colour tones but these are a bit too saturated and candy-coloured for my tastes. Android 10 comes as standard on the Moto G9 Power, and while phones are moving onto Android 11 by now, that’s not unusual in the budget sphere. Motorola’s ceaseless smartphone release schedule continues at pace. Undeterred by the global pandemic, Motorola’s factories are still churning out as many smartphones as the firm can possibly muster, and the third (and supposedly final) phone in the Moto G9 family has arrived before the year finally comes to a close. I’d take Motorola’s light approach to software over the heavy custom UIs of its rivals (including the Poco X3 NFC) any day of the week. Battery Life – The Moto G9 Power has truly epic stamina Motorola has mercifully ditched the glossy fingerprint-magnet design of the Moto G8 Power. Indeed, the Moto G9 Power might be even less concerned with turning heads than its predecessor. As for the cameras, the Moto G9 Play uses a triple-camera array on the rear. The primary snapper is a 48MP (f/1.7) affair, and this is complemented by a 2MP (f/2.4) macro and a 2MP (f/2.4) depth-sensing unit. Eagle-eyed readers might have noticed that the depth sensor actually replaces the Moto G8’s wide-angle camera, which is a bit of a shame. In my view, the option to squeeze more stuff in the frame is more beneficial than any marginal gains achieved by a depth sensor.

Low in cost, high on value

With that out of the way, it’s time to talk about the fun stuff. The Moto G9 Play is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 processor, which is paired with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (which can be expanded up to a further 512GB via microSD). Where you should set high expectations, however, is the Moto G9 Power’s stamina. Fitted with a gigantic 6,000mAh battery, the biggest in a Moto yet, the G9 Power is quoted as being able to last up to 60 hours on a single charge.

Motorola makes sparing, judicious tweaks here and there, many of which are accumulated in the classy Moto app. Here you can learn about Moto Gesture, which lets you do things like activate the torch with two chop motions, or twist twice to open the camera app. All of the Moto G9 Power’s quirks and foibles exist to facilitate one thing: a flipping huge battery. There’s even a pleasant surprise for night shooting. Typically, lower-end phones in the Moto G series do not have Motorola’s Night Vision shooting mode, but the Moto G9 Play does. At 6000 mAh, this is Motorola’s biggest battery ever, and certainly the biggest I’ve ever seen in a phone. The Moto G8 Power, by contrast, weighed in with a relatively wimpy 5000 mAh cell.Low-light photography isn’t nearly as impressive. Visual noise is noticeable throughout and the camera often struggled to focus on whatever I was pointing at, but the G9 Power’s nighttime pictures aren’t the worst I’ve seen. The result? The Moto G9 Play is perfectly pleasant to use, and we were not in a rush to switch to a different phone when the review period came to an end. For a handset this affordable, that is a solid endorsement.

The Moto G9 Play has three rear cameras but this feels like a single-camera phone because you only get one field of view. There’s no zoom, no ultra-wide. While the Moto G9 Plus isn’t completely immune to this phenomenon, it makes a good fist of it, as you can see from the sunset picture of my garden above. Zoomed in below, you’ll see a little detail lost but, again, this is very good for the price. The Moto G9 Power, however, at least offers something a bit different. The clue is in the name, of course, since the Moto G9 Power has the biggest battery of any Motorola phone to date, promising up to 60 hours of use on a single charge. If it’s as long-lasting as Motorola claims, then we might have another contender for the battery life crown on our hands. Can you do better for the same cost? Yes. Xiaomi sells several phones for similar money with higher resolution displays. The Xiaomi Redmi 9 and Redmi Note 9 have 1080p screens, as does the Realme 6. We recommend using Night Vision for any indoor shots of non-moving subjects, as it more or less fixes the dull and dingy appearance you’d otherwise get.In most situations it makes ample use of HDR to lift the shadows while retaining highlight detail. And while a lot of our photos have a slight purple/red skew, the Moto G9 Play’s color is reasonably lifelike when shooting in daylight. This phone is miles better than the Nokia 3.4 we reviewed recently, bringing up the performance to a level we’re happy with. And you get more for your cash here than from a Samsung Galaxy A21s. Such phones have smaller batteries, of course, but also smaller, higher resolution, and higher refresh rate displays. This right here is the pay off for having such an underwhelming screen in the G9 Power.
