By the time we moved to the house beside the pleasure gardens, which had a study, I was nearly finished. I am also a mother who works, but this author seems to think that working precludes any involvement in the normal day-to-day minutae of children's lives. A Life’s Work: On Becoming a Mother is Rachel Cusk’s funny, moving, brutally honest account of her early experiences of motherhood.

This book is an attempt to describe something of that arrival, and of the drama of which childbirth is merely the opening scene. It lay remotely, far from town, in a lush green crease of hills that rose steadily up to meet the moor. Aside from the prospect of self-revelation, it demands on the part of the author a willingness to trespass on the lives of those around him or her.I feel that my own experience of having a baby has been a very positive one- I feel happy and successful as a parent (so far! Even if you weren't writing an essay would probably still find it a useful read as it highlights how bewildering having a baby can be! Instead I have used aspects of my life as a canvas upon which my theme, which is motherhood, may conveniently be illustrated. In responding to the formal problems of the novel representing female experience she began to work additionally in non-fiction. To discover this is to feel that your life has become irretrievably mired in conflict, or caught in some mythic snare in which you will perpetually, vainly struggle.

For now, this is a letter, addressed to those women who care to read it, in the hope that they find some companionship in my experiences. When she is with them she is not herself; when she is without them she is not herself; and so it is as difficult to leave your children as it is to stay with them. It would have been more pleasant for them inside: the imposition was so direct that I wrote as quickly as I could. Still, I’m glad I listened, the narrator is very good, the book is quite short and it’s nice to have my own opinion about these somewhat controversial/marmite books. At first seeming like a complete downer, I almost gave up because I had just come out on the other side of an emergency c-section and just wanted to read something encouraging. At one point the author refers to the feeling that as a mother you are not fully yourself when you are with the baby but when you leave you feel that you are missing something of yourself. by chapter 3 or so a dull melancholy had set in combined with irritation at the continued use of the word "exiguous" and derivations thereof. It took me a long time to realise that her accusation came from the book itself, from a falsification of its personal material.

Claire Messud, Guardian Books of the Year 'Cusk is not afraid to address frankly the grief for freedom lost, the despair, pain, boredom and guilt - all in the context of the mother's unspeakable love for the baby .

This book focuses on the negative experiences of early motherhood (from her pregnancy to her child turning one) but within that context is so much more of what motherhood on a whole is about (particularly in the western modern landscape. My everlasting thanks to those who wrote in recommending various purveyors of zip-up sleepsuits as a nighttime alternative to fiddly poppers: they have changed my life. A woman, a grandmother, to cook her a beautiful meal and lovingly hold her baby in her arms so that she can eat it in peace and then go and have a nap. If we do away with the notion that the personal is political, as feminism-lite is wont to do, who gets left holding the baby?
