About this deal

All roads seem to lead Archer back to one very significant place, and with that comes a true sense of threat and an escalation in pacing and tension that brings Archer as close to a permanent ending as any man might ever wish, or not, to come. He describes the setting and history constantly throughout, using interesting anecdotes that strongly sarcastic and satirical. For example, Baldacci uses the social and legal inequality between men and women in that time period to propel and strengthen his story.

Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense. Depth of each characters is amazing and vocabulary matches the times of the 50’s and interesting period notes of the time. The 1950s weren't the fabled good old days, but they're fodder for gritty crime stories of high ideals and lowlifes, of longing and disappointment, and all the trouble a PI can handle.Though he isn't present in every scene, he conveys each piece of the story leading up to the murder as if he were an omniscient narrator, capable of accessing every character's interior perspective. In total, David has published 48 novels for adults; all have been national and international bestsellers and several have been adapted for film and television. When the woman disappears and they find a dead man in her home, Archer begins digging in a town that has multiple faces and alliances.

A lifelong Virginian, David is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia School of Law. Archer remains down to earth and ready to impress, asking the right questions and yet always finding ways to get into just enough trouble to prove worrisome. Absolutely recommended for folks who like their action with that perfect historical, American noirish edge. This book has a strong narrative that left me feeling the pulse of the story from the opening pages. Much later, when David thanked her for being the spark that ignited his writing career, she revealed that she'd given him the notebook to keep him quiet, "because every mom needs a break now and then. His books are published in over forty-five languages and in more than eighty countries, with 150 million copies sold worldwide.

Overall, “Dream Town” is an enjoyable journey back in time when things were different and America was recovering and rebuilding following the devastation of World War II, and unfortunately men and power ran the world. I see a number of loose ends left blowing in the wind and can only hope that Baldacci will address them before long, as my curiosity needs some sort of answer. When I read the synopsis for this book, I just knew that I was going to enjoy it and boy did I ever! His backstory is always coming up, but it is the great character development that keeps the reader enthralled. So, let’s admit, jumping into their world and successfully delivering an interesting read is a very tough challenge, to say the least.

And the plot is a well-paced, twisty whodunit full of red herrings, sleuthing, suspicious personalities, deduction, attraction, coercion, danger, mayhem, mischief, and murder.

David published his first novel, Absolute Power, in 1996; the feature film adaptation followed, with Clint Eastwood as its director and star. I plunged right into Baldacci's PI series featuring Aloysius Archer, WWII vet, set in Hollywood in the 50s. When he makes his way to Malibu later that night, he finds a dead man in her home, with no sign of Eleanor, and ends up being coshed and knocked out.
