About this deal

or similar (optional: to make a new top for the ukulele, you'll need a board as wide as your box or you'll have to glue pieces together) I build to a quality, not down to a price - wherever possible I use European and North American timbers. I also use European and USA made components such as Van Gent machineheads & fretwire, d'Addario and Newtone strings, Van Damme cable, Neutrik & Switchcraft connectors etc, instead of relying on cheaper "sweatshop economy" parts.

You don't need to do anything to get the cigar box ready if you don't want, but I did two modifications. Lace Music Products® is proud to announce the launch new Electric Cigar Box Guitar models for 2021! Uncle Crow shows how to make a simple, yet great sounding cigar box guitar in less than an hour. He includes step-by-step video instructions.once it's cut out shape it like crazy with sandpaper/files or whatever you prefer to use to get it feeling nice in your hand. be careful not to round over the edge where the fretboard will be glued on. The first fret, near the head, is 1/18 of this distance from the nut, the total length being in this instance 13 in. I wanted a ukulele and didn't want to spend too much money. My uncle happened to have some extra cigar boxes from someone who was throwing them out and one seemed like it would be a good size for a soprano ukulele, so I thought I would give making a cigar box ukulele a shot. I have been in the joinery business for over 30 years and I also own a successful kitchen business with my brother. I made cigar box guitars more as a hobby but in recent times I have had more and more enquiries to make one of a kind models. With my vast experience in the joinery field and a fully loaded workshop I can complete most builds within a four/ six week period. Anyone who loves music and is handy with tools can make a cigar box violin that is capable of producing really good tones. The violin may be designed for either two strings or four, depending on the maker's ability as a craftsman and aspirations as a player." >> Read more...

From Popular Science Monthly, July, 1920. Author Frank W. Vroom gives fairly brief instructions for constructing a “Jazzolin” using a cigar box. This is another take on the classic one-string Vaudeville fiddle Traditional style gourd banjo featuring a special features such as a double action trussrod and a method of adjusting the tension on the head The internal pot is a simple 6" cake tin, and the skin is a drum head, as they... >> Read more... We have two cigar box guitar models: The classic “f-hole” with its ornate and instantly recognisable sound-hole shape. And an alternative design built using beautifully intricate paper-covered boxes, with dual metal sound-hole covers (that you may recognise as being a pair of sink strainers!) A bridge support can also be applied beneath where the bridge will be. This is optional, but it seemed like a good idea. I ended up gluing the bridge to the box, but it is possible to screw it in, in which case a good bridge support is crucial. I cut the bridge support so it fit snugly inside the X brace. All my guitars are set up for easy fretted and slide playing - I'm a guitar player, so I understand how a guitar should perform. I source the best components for the price, and carefully craft them into truly gig-worthy instruments, with unparalleled playability and tone.

About Us

The second fret is set 1/18 the distance from the first fret to the bridge; the third, 1/18 from the second fret to the bridge, etc. Since I wanted to minimize the difficulty while keeping the price low it was a balance between buying as little as possible while not making it too hard to construct. the hardest thing to find locally will be the fretwire, I found mine at a store which also did some repair work. It's easy to find online though if you're willing to wait. Join us every Saturday for FREE cigar box guitar lessons. Drop in anytime during Noon and 2:00 pm and stay a few minutes or for the whole two hours. No experience is required! We always offer free loaner guitars and there's never any obligation to buy.

Now you can make the bridge and nut. you should use something hard for where the strings rest on the bridge and nut, I had some purpleheart so that's what I used. Material for the saddle and nut: I used dominos, which I cut down to size. Another type of hard plastic or ebony will also work. First, plane the boards. They must be perfectly flat or they will not glue evenly. Plane the boards on the concave side until flat (watch your fingers!). Mark the flat side of the board. Then turn the boards 90 degrees and plane a thin edge - again, be careful with those fingers - until it is flat. Mark the planed edge. It is important that you have flat edges to measure from when cutting boards down to size on the tablesaw. The nail violin is a musical instrument was invented by German violinist Johann Wilde in 1740. It consists of a semicircular wooden soundboard with iron or brass nails of different lengths arranged to produce a chromatic scale when bowed with a violin bow. Note about cutting on a band saw: When cutting a hardwood on a band saw, some pressure has to be applied to move the wood through the blade. I was not prepared for the moment when the wood slipped past the blade and the pressure was suddenly gone. When cutting slow down as you reach the end of a cut so the change in pressure does not whip your hand toward the blade.

The head shape is usually a trademark of an instrument maker. Search online for ideas. I chose a very simple square shape with rounded edges. The head should "dip" 3-5 degrees downward to add tension to the strings (see uke2total, below).
