About this deal

Only a handful of people had been allowed access to the script; neither Macdonald or Simon Kane were willing to talk to the press. In the years since, the myth has only hardened – Kane the tortured martyr, driven to put her own psyche on stage.

In one essay, he’ll contradict what he just said in the previous essay, or he’ll say something completely opposite of anything he’s ever said, and that’s where the idea of Notes and Counternotes derives from. The first such adaptation of Kane's works, the production was approved by Sarah Kane's brother, and received critical acclaim.

In February 1999, she killed herself at King’s College hospital, south London, three days after a previous suicide attempt. Psychosis itself is coming up for two decades old; this month, an operatic adaptation by composer Philip Venables will open at the Royal Opera House, the first of its kind. Michael Billington of The Guardian newspaper asked, "How on earth do you award aesthetic points to a 75-minute suicide note? Old Red Lion Theatre (Tangram Theatre, 2006), Arcola Theatre (2006), the Young Vic Theatre (2009), the Barbican Theatre (TR Warszawa, Easter 2010), Access Theatre (Raw Theatre Group, Easter 2010), The Theatre Project (Off Off-Broadway - The Red Room, Summer 2010), ADC Theatre (October 2010), York Theatre Royal (March 2011), Sittingbourne Community College Theatre Company (July 2011), The Hamilton Fringe Festival at Theatre Aquarius [Black Box Fire Theatre Company, July 2011] and the George Ignatieff Theatre at University of Toronto (27–29 October 2011), Fourth Monkey Theatre Company (March 2012), Rangi Ruru Girls' School performed it in the New Zealand Theatre Federation Festival (September 2012), Crooked Pieces (Drayton Theatre London, September 2012), The Questors Theatre (January 2015), director Roza Sarkisian and Theatre Actor, Kyiv, Ukraine (2018), Anton's Well Theater Company, Oakland, California (July—August 2018), and Chico State Theater Company at California State University, Chico (December 2022). To me the heart of it is a love story – what does it mean to love, can we love, all those questions.

Obviously, it isn’t an easy watch for the audience either, as there is a constant sense of distress and discomfort among all.Experiential theatre," she said, "purposes to make the audience feel as though they have experienced what was presented before them onstage. There were a few who left the play in the beginning itself, because it was just too much to cope with it mentally. Mental health issues are still a stigma in our society, so telling such an account is bound to have repercussions. But Sarah did kill herself, and she was writing a play about what it feels like to be suicidally depressed. Psychosis premiered one month after her suicide, the connection between the playwright and her work was apparent to all.

The opera was first presented in 2016 by the Royal Opera in London, in a production by Ted Huffman, and has subsequently seen productions in London, New York City, Strasbourg and Dresden. Narrating stories of depression and anxiety on stage can be difficult, especially if the storyline sounds more like a ‘suicide note’ than the script of a play.

This dilemma is possibly one of the reasons that over the years theatremakers around the world have avoided staging British playwright-director Sarah Kane’s enigmatic yet distressing plays. in its small upstairs studio, the very same space where Blasted had premiered five years earlier, but even when tickets rapidly sold out, many in the building remained nervous. Stage productions of the play vary greatly, therefore, with between one and several actors in performance; the original production featured three actors. Replete with shocking confessions, piercing monologues and raw visuals, there aren’t any positive takeaways from the one-hour-12-minute performance to be honest. According to Durga, the script may seem disjointed on the surface, but for her as an actor, it was important to tap into Sarah’s emotions and the pain that she was going through to be able to portray it on stage.

It was her last work, first staged at the Royal Court's Jerwood Theatre Upstairs on 23 June 2000, directed by James Macdonald, nearly one and a half years after Kane's death on 20 February 1999. It was crucial to Kane to show depression with all the accuracy she could summon, he adds: “Mental illness is so often sentimentalised, or portrayed as madness – I hate that word. Indian director Arvind Gaur performed this play as a one-woman show with British actress Ruth Sheard in 2005. Contemplation and discussion of suicide are prominent and while there is no strict narrative or timeline, certain issues and events are clearly dealt with: deciding whether to take medication to treat depression, the desires of the depressed mind, the effects and effectiveness of medication, self-harm, suicide and the possible causes of depression. Its language varies between dialogues, confessions and contemplative poetic monologues reminiscent of schizophasia. All of us have battled anxiety issues at some point of our life, and working on this piece has absorbed us to a great extent. Psychosis was the astonishing final work of the radical British playwright Sarah Kane, first performed posthumously in 2000. Who knows it could also be self-love or her desire to find someone — a ray of hope that would serve as a purpose for living,” says Srinivas, adding, “Reading the play multiple times, once as part of Kahe Vidushak Foundation’s Natya Alochan, gave me a different perspective of the script. Designer Jeremy Herbert created a setting that was as stark as the text, a single large mirror suspended at a 45-degree angle over a plain white floor – visually elegant, but also a metaphor for the script’s prism of multiplying personalities.
