About this deal

The only difference I could notice was a difference of about one foot when using the 'Find Nearby' feature, which doesn't really make any odds when trying to find your bike – unless it's a very, very small bike!

You might want to consider where you fit it, though: under the bottle cage on the top of my down tube means water flows past it and underneath it, but if you mounted it on the bosses on the underside of the down tube, which are common on many gravel bikes, gravity could result in water getting in. Adding the AirTag to the holder is simply a matter of unscrewing the back compartment with a hex key, popping it in, and screwing it back up. Wanted to attach an AirPod to my cheap (but close to my heart) bike and to do it discretely involved a bit of thinking. It was also picking up signal fine from my bike shed to wherever I was within my flat, and the only other place I regularly leave my bike is in the secure bike storage under my office, where I wouldn’t get a signal anyway. The mounts found below didn’t make it into my recommended list as I didn’t find them to be suitable for the required purpose.Other options, such as putting it in the frame, under the saddle, or in the stem cap, can reduce the AirTag signal, and again rely on a potential thief not knowing they're there.

I have therefore amended the article above and wanted to be transparent about how this mistake was made below. That said, the AirTag itself does have a very impressive IP67 rating, which means it's completely protected against airborne particles and water, including submersion in a metre of water. Three security Torx screws (one spare) and a hex shank drill bit are supplied, meaning no tools are required for installation, and the holder can’t be removed easily by a thief. I picked my girlfriend up from a night out with friends the other day and she had her friends airpods. If you don’t want your AirTag or its mount to be visible when attached to your bike, an under-saddle mount such as the Ninja bikeTag Saddle mount is a great option.

I still plan to keep using airtags on the bikes (3 of ours have them so far) but they’re maybe not as useful as they were. Discerning Cyclist is also an affiliate partner for several other programmes, including Rakuten, which you can learn more about here. Sorry if I’m misunderstanding it, I’m still trying to get my head around all the ins and outs of using AirTags for bike tracking purposes.

When testing for tracking distance, I found that the Maco Trace was discoverable at an average distance of 45ft after three attempts, finishing towards the bottom of the group in terms of distance. Our list of products range from mobile chargers and USB cables to high quality long-lasting portable power banks that won’t harm your expensive smartphones in any way. Muc-Off Ltd and any of its group / connected companies are not liable for any loss of property or theft in relation to the use of this product. In the end I used a plastic holder that sat underneath my bottle cage, which was fine but dependent on any potential thief not noticing it was there and simply removing it.

However, it doesn't completely seal the AirTag, which isn't the end of the world but it does mean there could be some water ingress. It still works today, which is perhaps as good of a demonstration as any that the mount is a) fine with this design and b) AirTags are fairly bombproof.
