About this deal
She's an absolute forced to be reckoned with and I know at the end of the day, she's going to make me, and her family, proud! My best friend's daughter is mixed and I couldn't stop imagining her as Amari and how happy she will be to eventually read these books. But between the fearsome new Head Minister's strict anti-magician agenda, fierce Junior Agent rivalries, and her brother Quinton's curse steadily worsening, Amari's plate is full. I also just think I read it at the wrong time- at the moment, I have to be in a very specific mood to enjoy middle grade.
When she turns down the offer to head the League of Magicians to stand up against the animosity, she sets in motion a series of events that result in a deadly game for power and control. You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! Your selection was perfect for our children and what really made the difference was your ability to engage with each child, discuss their interests and help them to choose a suitable book based on your extensive knowledge of the books you were selling. Seems about right, although it's a pretty detailed narrative with a lot of world building, so it's not a casual read and better for really voracious bookworms as such, I would think. My eleven year got the first Amari book for his birthday and declared it "the best book I've ever read!
And her best friend Elsie is really great from the off, being just so appealing and likeable as a person. Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. What I really noticed, however, was how lost I felt when reading this book, especially during the first half of the novel. the cast of characters is just as wonderful as ever, but for most of the novel, they all act independently from one another with only Amari as the connecting piece.
B. Alston remains a national treasure, and this series is still something incredibly special and one of the best out there! Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first. And as I read, I remembered that Magnus wore a cowboy hat and was ‘western’ even though the author really didn’t remind us of who he was.
