Also, you are correct in that, as far as I can tell, the Bad Elf unit is discontinued, which may be problematic.

I tried logging points directly on the device, and while the machine beeps to indicate a completed log, when I go back to view the logs, they show as zero points collected. However, when the Bad Elves were at the Miami Boat Show they said that the Pro would eventually support more than iOS and also that they were working on a way to add an NMEA 0183 feed to the GPS the Pro is already streaming over Bluetooth. My iPhone4 managed 3hrs constant use running MotionX GPS with the Bad Elf GPS attached and pulling in map data over 3G.

Whilst it won't be the answer for anyone wishing to use apps such as Google Maps that require access to mobile data, you can always use a MiFi or other mobile data terminal if you wished.

I followed the early development of this product with keen interest back in the days before Apple had graced it's iPhone with an internal GPS receiver. When I updated the Bad Elf app yesterday I not only discovered that it can now flip log data over to many of the mapping and charting apps on my pad but that the logger itself got a firmware update (again one-button-easy to install) that includes log filtering and the ability to bump the refresh rate up to 10 times a second.
