About this deal

I mean, c'mon, there's a section when they want you to be excited from watching a teenage version of Misery.

Less so a horror and more a thriller, Can’t Come Out To Play plays on fears of claustrophobia and being incarcerated. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. However, Maryann's visits continue in Katherine's absence; she even takes Andy outside to play baseball.

A dazed Richard heads down to the basement, and, after unplugging his son's ventilator, sets the basement on fire and lies next to his son. The Harvest (released as Can't Come Out to Play in Europe) [1] is a 2013 American horror thriller film released by IFC Films that was directed by John McNaughton. Her performance is understated and subtle, yet perfectly and entirely successfully at presenting the quiet evil that resides inside her character. The film stars fan favorites Peter Fonda, Michael Shannon, Samantha Morton, Charlie Tahan (From TV Series GOTHAM) and Natasha Calis. A TV weatherman is recruited by government scientists to help contain powerful freak winds before they converge and destroy the planet.

That incident, introduces us to Katherine (played by Samantha Morton) who is caring for her sick invalid son, Andy (played by Charlie Tahan) alongside her husband (played by Michael Shannon). The script seems a little thin in places and the characters of Maryann’s Grandparents could have been fleshed out (and acted! Can't Come Out to Play is out on DVD and digital platforms from 22 June 2015, courtesy of Signature Entertainment.would be really shameful to be associated with anybody in this visual sewage, and being related to any of the associated people would probably make me cutting ties and drift away, changing name and all. We never know how Kathleen’s going to act and her personality shifts more suddenly than the British weather. She desperately tries to get her deceased son out of the burning house, but is unsuccessful when the roof collapses on them.

Whether it be Richard, who can’t escape his unhappy marriage and controlling wife, or Andy who literally can’t escape from his wheelchair, there is a definite exploration of what it means to be stuck in a situation. As the mother, Kathleen’s only desire and drive comes from treating her ill son, and without that, she will lose her identity. I can see the reason for that but actually it is quite different as you'll see from the twist at the end (which I did see coming but was still a fantastic idea). John McNaughton sought a PG rating for the film, but failed: "I made a promise that I would deliver a movie with no overt violence, no bad language, no sex, no nudity. In her role as Katherine Young, Samantha Morton provides a disturbing insight into the lengths a mother will go to protect her child. As the young pair grow ever closer, Charlie's mother (Morton) becomes increasingly concerned for her sick boy and obsessive in her quest to shelter him from harm. The psychopathy of Andys mother is so awful it’s hard to watch at times but the performance is truly commendable. After Katherine meets up with Maryann's grandparents, and reveals to them that Andy is dying, they prohibit her from visiting Andy again.

Can’t Come Out To Play explores ideas surrounding the role of the woman; with the two main female characters representing completely opposing ideologies. As their friendship begins to evolve, Maryann tries to come to terms with why Andy's mother doesn't like her and doesn't want her there. The most terrifying aspect of the film comes from this harrowing performance by Samantha Morton, who plays the doting, loving and obsessive mother. Can't Come Out to Play (formerly known as The Harvest) is a chilling psychological thriller starring Natasha Calis ( The Possession) as Maryann, Charlie Tahan as Andy and Samantha Morton and Michael Shannon as Andy's parents Katherine and Richard Young.
