The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX350 contains thirteen Picture Effects, some with additional sub options: Toy camera (normal, cool, warm, green, magenta), Pop color, Posterization (colour, mono), Retro photo, Soft high-key, Partial color (green, blue, yellow, red), High-contrast mono, Soft focus (low, mid, high), HDR painting (low, mid, high), Rich-tone mono, Miniature (top, middle horizontal, bottom, left, middle vertical, right), Watercolor, Illustration (low, mid, high). I zoomed the WX350 to its maximum 500mm equivalent focal length and took a sequence of shots in fading light with progressively slower shutter speeds. Even so, the DSC-WX350’s easily pocketable proportions and light weight of 164g ready-to-shoot do make it an unobtrusive companion. The WX350 is a point-and-shoot compact, it has a Program Auto mode and two fully automatic modes, though lacks ASM exposure modes and advanced features like exposure bracketing.

We suspect that most people will find it the most appealing of the three – not as fiddly as the WX220 but easier to slip into a pocket than the HX60. Alongside the mode dial it’s business as usual, with the power button, shutter release and zoom ring. The small flush mounted on/off button is the same colour as the camera, but the top quarter section is an LED charge indicator light, which a nice design touch. The Cyber-shot WX350 is a point-and-shoot compact and it lacks the manual and semi-auto ASM modes of more advanced compacts, but it’s far from basic and has lots of assisted shooting modes and creative features.The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX350 is some sort of a compromise - where surprisingly they are being handled very well by this little camera. On the top left corner of the rear panel, conveniently situated for thumb operation is the movie button. Thankfully, Sony has taken the decision to unify all of its menu systems, so if you've used a camera from its DSLT or CSC range, you'll likely be more at home. Thanks to the built-in wireless (Wi-Fi) connectivity feature, Sony WX350 lets you transfer your photos directly to compatible devices without any physical connection.

With five shooting modes including Program Auto, Superior Auto and Intelligent Auto, 14 Scene Modes (such as Portrait, Pet Mode, Anti Motion Blur and Landscape) and a dedicated Panorama Mode, the WX350 should appeal to anyone looking for an easy-to-use compact camera that has a good selection of functions. The 20x zoom wasn't even a requirement on my list - but once you have it, you find yourself using it - plus, the details at the long end of the zoom are nicely preserved.
