However, seeing as I only had 20 Troops and Spearmen needed more to be effective, I decided to go for a Halberdier block now and split them down into detachments once I added the necessary amount of Spearmen. Thus, every province and each city-state in the Empire has its own army which is equipped and maintained at its own expense.

They serve as the fire watch, police force and town or city guards whilst in time of war they march out to defend their province or to join the main Imperial army under their Elector Count. Meanwhile the Swordsmen move round to attack the enemy in the sides or to protect the Halberdiers against a flanking attack. Okay we are about done with this round, I just have a few tasks before it is time to slap some paint down. This box set contains 10 multi-part Freeguild Guard, which can be assembled with spears, halberds or swords and includes options for a Sergeant, standard bearer and drummer. They train every day to fight with these specialised tactics, which rely on their legendary discipline.They may be corrupt, or prone to cutting corners, but it is in their interests to command effective fighting forces. The one thing the true scale collector might actually want from a GW kit, the weapons, is the least usable because of their gigantic size. Recruiting parties travel through the provinces, beating their drums and promising a life of adventure and glory for those who sign up to join the Emperor's armies. But Phil and I were both keen on tying in certain background elements – with the household colours being purple and white, plus I liked the idea of painting all the armour black. On the other, the Perry arms are not completely terrible though of course arms designed to join in a two-handed grip suffer from the extra wide torso. There are far more weapons arms in the box than bodies to carry them though, so that is a lot of waste. Soldiers develop a cynical attitude and sardonic humour all their own and it is this sort of experience that enables them to relate to other soldiers, sometimes even deadly enemies, better than they can relate to civilians.

Empire melee troops like halberdiers and spearmen have light armour with no armour upgrades purchasable. Long forced marches, makeshift camps, unsanitary conditions, rampant disease, hostile territory, aloof officers, a terrifying foe, any number of factors can make waging war a disconcerting as well as dangerous experience. You may remember I want to pinch the repeater gun from the GW kit to make an Imperial Engineer out of Perry bits looking something like the picture to the above left. Specific contents may vary depending on the edition or box set, but generally, it includes Bases for each miniature.

I guess I'm the odd man out as I got into the Empire again purely because I loved the new state troops! The reason you may think standard troopers wore puffed sleeves is probably because landsknecht regiments were comprised of pikemen, halberdiers and handgunners too. This may have been what drove GW to give up on rank and flank square bases in favour of round bases in skirmish formation. Loved this Keith Haring toy, it engrossed my 4 year old just as much as it fascinated me - hours of fun, and it looks so good too. For peasants the army might be their only chance to leave their local area, for a desperate street thug their only course away from a life of crime, for a respectable farmer a genuine chance to see the world.

State Regiments also serve as the Empire's town guards, the fire watch and its police force, as well as forming a standing army ready at a minute's notice to repel enemy invasions. Some live to regret their decision, however, ending up as outlaws or criminals or joining ragtag mercenary companies, unable to escape the life of a soldier. I don’t think the box of 10 is a problem as such, it’s just that if you want to do an infantry heavy army you’ll pay more as you need a lot of boxes to make the larger/horde units we’re being encouraged to take. Age of Sigmar players who never played Warhammer Fantasy may wonder if I am not being a bit unfair complaining of how poorly these models rank up on 20mm squares.Otto approves this action as he loves to be around gunners, being himself a Hochland Long Rifle hefting gun nut. Now, the variety is what I like most, even if it is not the best pose or dressed the way I would like. Yes, I know the Empire takes a lot of artistic style from them, but like with all things GW, the style of their armies takes from many historical sources, not just one. They’re a group of Marienburg mercenary marines and would be perfect for my army, freeing those spare parts from their plastic framed prison.
