About this deal

Be it a light bite from the grazing menu, long lunch or celebratory dinner; there is something for everyone. It took awhile to really get to know the characters and the story line being so broken up didn't make sense to me.

Some felt more contrived than others, but in general the most important players (be it cast wise or game wise) were given a lot to work with.I spent the novel wondering about the new discoveries being made by the characters throughout the story. What is it about our deep need to ride a possessed roller coaster that whips us from fear to relief and then back to fear faster than we can scream, “Ghost! NO PLACE TO HIDE is a gripping thriller that follows a few different storylines and different perspectives which all connect to each other in some way. A high-stakes hide-and-seek competition in an abandoned amusement park comes to life in this graphic novel adaptation of the bestselling thriller.

Hide is a truly excellent and distinctive book, one that I’m sure will stick with me for the near future. Mack is our primary protagonist, but many of the competitors get developed as we spend time in their minds during the game. The hiding and seeking is the best part of the plot and all you need to know is that as the story progresses, the madness enhances.Often sad, interspersed with lighter touches of humour, the book is a record of lives that function without families, jobs or prospects, yet are still portrayed with a sense of dignity amid the depression. A high-stakes hide-and-seek competition turns deadly in this dark supernatural thriller from New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White, perfect for fans of Stephen King and SQUID GAME. There was so much exposition in Hide, like a ridiculous amount, and I am still upset that I didn't get to know more behind the ritual for opening the gate and what Tommy's connection was to the underworld. The whole point to a horror type book is that you’re supposed to care about the characters when bad things happen to them, otherwise you don’t care and the emotion just isn’t there while reading. That being said, this is a book that takes the author from her usual YA genre into the adult genre and for me this still felt a little on the YA side.

The ending left a lot of questions unanswered and was really a let down but I guess it sets it up for a sequel. I was frustrated by the lack of explanation regarding how this family continued to run a murder contest every seven years and why. However, I feel that the direction it ended up going in ended up feeling really strange and unsatisfying. For Mack, this offer is life-changing, and even though entering this game brings her back to the darkest time of her life, she’s willing to do whatever she has to win. Daniel watches the successes he has worked so hard for flow out if his hands like water, before he has an opportunity to rally and regain them. I also feel like there was a missed opportunity for so much more frightful suspense - holding your breath waiting to see what happens. This is a moving and poignant piece of literature which melds beauty and tragedy in a stark allegory of power dynamics and marginalization.
