About this deal
Much like the original Imhotep board game, players will seek glory by building monuments to outshine their opponent. This game is exactly what I look for in a dedicated 2-player title: quick setup/teardown, high replay value, “thinky filler” status, and a playtime that clocks in at around 30-40 minutes which enables multiple plays in one evening if desired. So, other than the AP and the take-that which may bother some groups, are there any other negatives to Imhotep?
At the beginning of the round, the top boat card is flipped over and this will tell the players which four boats are available for the round.Green cards award additional points at the end of the game for every third stone in the specified area. Apart from those action tiles, there are four other types of tiles that all are sought after for different scoring aspects.
Mary Prasad (1 play): Similar to Greg, I enjoyed my one play OK – mainly because most of us were new and I liked the people I played with. Like any game, when you’re actually in the running for the winner’s circle, the game feels exciting and fun, but when you’re falling way behind the pack, it feels pretty hopeless and that sucks the joy right out of it. The real star of the show comes from the multiple tile types and how they are all used in different ways along your “player board” area. It can be a bit hard to plan since someone might sail a boat when you weren’t expecting them to or to a monument that is less than optimal. Imhotep is definitely not a game where you can build up an engine and then set it loose to see where it takes you.Since those workers will come off the board and need to be replaced, any time you force them into the unload they don’t want to take, you are slowing them down. Players take it turn and can carry out 1 of the 3 following actions: Place a worker, unload a boat, or play an action tile. Each player takes a coloured set of stones and a sled, and each player places one stone on the zero space of the score track. The game is easy enough to learn, with most of the actions and ways to score points being intuitive, but experience and tactical play matters. The tricky part is knowing when to do these things and figuring out how to best perform these actions so that it leaves you in an advantageous position while leaving your opponents in a disadvantageous one.
