About this deal

Donkey jackets are said to have been invented in the late 1800s by two or three different people: John Partridge, the owner of the Keystone works who worked on the Manchester ship canal, and George Key, a small bespoke tailor, have both been named. The front vertical edges fall straight and are squared-off at the bottom edge which is also straight horizontally with no vent at the back. Due to the stylish look and warm comfort of the jacket it became a huge fashion statement and still is to this day. Some of the navvies worked on donkey engines (a steam-powered winch or logging engine), providing the inspiration for the name of George Key's new coat: the donkey jacket. The workwear-inspired ‘Veste’ jacket is water-repellent and designed with a classic pointed collar, a central button closure and black faux leather inserts on the shoulders and elbows.

Gloverall’s men’s jackets echo historic workwear styles, from lightweight jackets with useful pockets to heavier weight cloth with classic Gloverall features. Lightweight with soft fabric makes this so comfortable - the only downside being that these days you can get away with wearing it to the smartest occasions too, so you'll need one for everyday and another for best! This produced laughter from the whole group while they burst into the closing tune of “ Auf wiedersehen Pet” in unison loud as fuck in the middle of the street. Another iconic British design originally designed for the Working Class who required a tough durable jacket to keep them warm in the cold winters. It has the same problem as the Warrior jacket: the wool-polyester mix and PVC feel more ‘modern’, if you catch my drift. Also, notice the lack of PVC shoulders, which is something else I failed to mention: they were common without them. Designed in 1888 by George Key for workers on the Manchester Ship Canal, it was the navvies working on the donkey engines who provided the inspiration for the name of the new jacket.

I do remember seeing a few skinheads in donkey jackets back then, and I had it in my memory as a skinhead style long before Nick Knights book came out. Anyway I still have all my skinheadclothes and refuse to throw them out even if I have retired from the bovver brigade so to speak. The jackets were bought wholesale by councils and large companies, directly from the manufacturers, when a worker left his job, his jacket then went to the next man. Later models were a sleeker fit, with a slightly smaller collar, which suited me better, and I still have one of these in good condition.
