About this deal

These children may be like your family – or they may be your worst nightmare – or your fondest fantasy – or even just a lot of silly nonsense – but unless you like children’s fiction to be “improving” and “instructive,” I think you will love these purely entertaining, witty stories about childhood in an age that is past, though not necessarily a golden one. In fact, the “about” blurbs at the end of the book suggest that they were part of a large brood of badly-behaved children, like the Brown children in these books, and that their grandmother told them stories about Nurse Matilda when they were particularly naughty.

Brown was very sweet but she really was rather foolish about her dear, darling children, and never could believe that they could really be naughty. In fact, they are so naughty that parents might want to take a good look at them before giving them to their kids. Nurse Matilda herself is the children’s nurse from…well, you don’t really know where she’s from, do you? Nanny McPhee: The Collected Tales of Nurse Matilda by Christianna Brand, illustrated by Edward Ardizzone. You get to hear about the costumes and make up she has to wear for the film, all the efforts made in set design and the props department, as well as all the trained animals they use on set.Had the characters had the same names i think it would have made more sense to them even if the storylines were different. I really enjoyed Emma Thompson's alterations, bringing more of a reason for the kids to be so far out of hand. But the second two get progressively duller and more repetitive until I finally couldn't finish the last one. The Brown children change their ways but only for a time, ending up in the hospital in the last book.

Evangeline and Cedric resist at first, but then realize their feelings for each other and agree to marry, satisfying Adelaide's conditions for maintaining her financial support but causing her to faint from shock. BUT…the first story of Nurse Matilda is definitely worth the read, especially if you like the Nanny McPhee movies.Summary: A funny, quirky mix of Emma Thompson's entertaining film diaries and the new Nanny McPhee story itself. The sequel Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010) is loosely based on the trilogy of Nurse Matilda books. Piggle-Wiggle because that character has always been in the back of mind when I viewed the first movie. When their spoilt cousin from London comes to stay, it is hate at first sight and the house becomes a battle-zone.

Nurse Matilda arrives at the household of the Brown family and becomes a nanny to the innumerable Brown children. Cedric swiftly understands his children do not like the bride and, recognizing that she is not right for him or his children, joins in the commotion himself. That black stick must be magical in some way, because it can fiddle with time, the fabric of reality, and the thought processes of adults. From the still photos I have seen (which came with the Nanny McPhee edition of the books) it looks as if there aren’t enough children, and though they do look horrid they also look awfully clean and well-kempt. I also read the book (not all of it, I don't think), but I remember that even Emma Thompson said that the stories in the book weren't really used and that Nurse Matilda was a little naughtier.

Brown keep hearing the phrase, "What you need is Nanny McPhee" but they aren't sure who she is or how to find her. Having delighted generations of readers since their first publication in the sixties, the books have now formed the inspiration for the newly-released and fabulous Nanny McPhee, written and adapted for the big screen by Emma Thompson who stars as Nanny McPhee opposite Colin Firth as Mr Brown. She comes out of nowhere, ugly as sin; bangs her stick on the floor and suddenly the children can’t stop doing whatever they are doing until it becomes so horrid that they beg her to let them off.
