About this deal

The idea behind this book is interesting, but it’s one that really needed to be explored in a story that was more than four chapters. This being a Director's Cut, we also get the full script and while it's always cool to see that, I don't think this is a script that deserved this much attention. For some reason (and I'm still not sure why) this book was originally announced in 2004 but wasn't released until 2016.

I would put this book up there in the ranks of The Dark Knight and it is a must read for Batman fans! While isolated, it is a truly unique and fascinating style, but within the story, it made for an overly-ambitious, messy and chaotic experience. If instead you are looking for a fun take on Batman and the Joker having to work together as a team, then you're in the right frame of mind for this one. Batman’s immediate victory (which we all knew was coming) is achieved in a way that feels a little cheap. Jim Lee's artwork was fantastic, especially how the viewpoint of both Batman and Joker became more and more like a hallucination as the Trojan horse virus worked its way through their systems.

The fight begins, and Batman pieces it all together in his mind as Bane begins to beat down the pair. Batman: Europa was originally announced in 2004 after Jim Lee was inspired from living in Italy and wanted to do a comic with some of the artists he met in Europe. When he traces the Batcomputer’s hack that warns him of the dose to Berlin, he finds Joker is already one step ahead of him in discovering the hacker–because he’s infected too. First Thus-" The greatest talents of American and European comics unite for a Batman story like none other! Batman Europa gets the full cinematic treatment in this opening salvo of a story that’s going to crisscross the continent as Batman and Joker team-up after clashing here in “Berlin”.Batman: Europa’s story was very thin on the ground and ultimately wasted a great concept - it’s a very forgettable tale - though Azzarello is incapable of writing a bad Joker (“My, my, what a pair we are… Heh”). He stops his love affair with the city for a moment to follow a local piece of shit to where local pieces of shit get together and finds.

The art is the reason to pick this one up, as it enhances an enjoyable three star Batman story to a four. I say that as someone who was honestly curious about this book who picked it up and had everything he liked about the character and his cast just slapped in his face like a pie from a malicious clown. Batman and Joker both end up poisoned, and have to "team-up" as they follow a trail of clues across Europe in a race against time. When we last left our heroes, they failed to save Nina, and a man who dressed as the amalgamation of Joker and Batman had left them a clue in the form of burning coals.
