About this deal

For example, in the fictional intro to the chapter on emotions, I show Matt referring approvingly to Kurt Cobain’s death by suicide and Matt’s mother being worried by the doodle of nooses in the margin of his essay. This is not intended to be a full statement of all your rights under the Distance Selling Regulations. The information was presented in a really nice easy to read way and I think the stories that are presented also help to make it a more interesting read and help to put it into real life perspective rather than just facts on a page.

I originally got this book for my son to help him to navigate the inevitable changes that the teen years bring! Aimed directly at teenagers, it is pitched just right - with the correct balance between facts, theory, and guidance.I think this is a really valuable book, since reading it I’ve recommended it to a number of friends who work with teenagers. I originally borrowed this book from my local library and enjoyed it so much that I bought a copy for me and my family. And I realised this was of huge interest, reassurance and practical relevance to adolescents themselves. I would definitely recommend this to everyone with children coming up to the teen years as I think its a great help to understand whats going on. I’m obviously no longer a teenager myself, nor a parent of a teenager, but I found it fascinating to be able to think back to my own teenage years and my experiences (and those of some classmates) and finally understand why some people acted the way that they did.Contrary to popular (parental) opinion, teenagers are not the lazy, unpleasant - frankly, spotty - louts they occasionally appear to be. The downside is the book is a pretty brief treatise on the subject and lacks thorough analysis on the subject. Who would have guessed that the ability to accurately assess the emotion in a face actually diminishes between the ages of about 11 and 16 before recovering again afterwards? This book is an absolute must for anyone with children (pre-teen so that you can prepare ahead and during teen so that you know what's going on)! Even if centuries/millennia of human females more often having caring or gathering roles and males more often having combative or hunting roles might have created patterns of typical skill-sets, this does not mean that each can’t very easily learn the other set of skills.

At Books2Door, we believe that reading is a fundamental skill that every child should have to help improve their vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills. Never miss a post, including competitions, offers, discounts and giveaways, as well as intelligent, perceptive, science-based articles. Morgan has a gift for simplifying and explaining complicated subject matter with a light but precise touch, and she is careful to distinguish between established facts and theories and speculations of her own and other people's. I had, for example, joked about the bad behaviour of the fictional character, Marco, in the chapter on risk – the attempt to get a laugh didn’t do service to the serious topic so I toned it down. For teens, it will bring them solace that all the frustrations, emotions, etc that they are experiencing is normal and expected and will settle down. The human brain hasn’t changed in that time – but individual brains adapt according to what they do and experience. My new 'how to cope' guide will not be in use for a few years yet but I will hold it close when the time comes.

All the reviews in this archive were written by members of the Scattered Authors Society , sharing thoughts and enthusiasms about books and reading and based on their long experience of working with children and visiting schools and libraries . The fact that the book is written for both parent and teenager invites some minor problems with regard to the nature of its content, but all in all, it is a creative part of a solution to an age-old problem: understanding the enigmatic teenager. Her most recent novel, Wasted , won several awards, including the Scottish Children’s Book Award (older readers) and was longlisted for the Carnegie Medal. I was also clear that any differences stemming from biology do not have to dictate behaviour or skills. Because of its inherent complexity, the book bites off a little more than it can chew: but as a way towards non-judgmentally enabling teens and their parents to understand what may be going on during this confusing time, it is a truly excellent way in.
