Anyone who’s played Chaos Space marines in 8th/9th knows that this is a stupid mistake, as taking -1 to hit turns off the extra hits for Death to the False Emperor and besides, there isn’t a ton of value in actually giving a thunder hammer to a character who starts with WS 3+. As the fate of the world hangs in the balance, a small force of Eldar Rangers come to protect the essence of their Exodite brethren in the latest Warhammer 40,000 Battlebox! Going forward I hope they fix this and make these battle boxes more user-friendly in the way you approach the units contained within. With so many new models on the horizon for Craftworlds collectors, the eyes of the hobbyverse will be fixed on Eldritch Omens to see just how good the new Aeldari models are. In addition, they’ve got a new trick to help with the key issue such units face, which is getting charged and brutally murdered if you go second.

Each side gets access to a Tactical Ruse or Equipment Ruse which add additional effects for the battle, for example the ability to gain special ammunition that corrodes the save characteristic of a vehicle or the ability to plant mines that can be set off when enemy models get near them! Beyond that, there’s the Maulerfiend (which can also be built as a Forgefiend), and two generous transfer sheets, one for the Craftworlds and one for Heretic Astartes, with 379 and 364 transfers respectively.Whilst its expansive content is a relative cut-and-paste affair when compared to previous battlebox releases, the real value of this box lies in the selection of staggering, top-of-the-range miniatures that come with it. And it’s not just them: the beauty in the both the Aeldari and the new Chaos models leaves droves of similar products looking dated and second-rate. We’ll be taking a look at the finished assembled and painted models a little later in this review along with the updated rules (if they have them) for those units!

Containing 16 fabulous miniatures – all but one of which are completely, gloriously new – transfers, and a comprehensive campaign booklet, Eldritch Omens has everything you need to decide the fate of the warp-cursed world of Daethe. The new Autarch profile in the book contains both the Battle Focus and Strands of Faith abilities as recently discussed on Warhammer Community (Though sadly the full details of these abilities are not listed, just a reference to se Codex Aeldari) along with a new rule that allows the Re-Roll Stratagem to be used twice a phase rather than just once! I fully intend to put those on all my units of these, and I’m hoping I’m guessing correctly which part is which out of the kit, as the Battlebox instructions don’t label these. They completely wipe out the mutants, cultists and meager psykers guarding the World Spirit before they could even raise an alarm.

It looks super strong – there’s definitely going to be times when variance bites and you don’t roll the numbers you need to assign dice to the best options (which are often going to be Wound and Save rolls), but when you’ve got the right ones waiting in the wings you’re going to feel like a god, and your opponent is going to have some big headaches. Gun-wise, you’ve got three choices – a Reaper Launcher, a Dragon Fusion Gun and a Death Spinner, all of which look like they’ll have uses, and two of which get exciting boosts. For the Chaos Space Marines they get 3 Forgefiend traits and 3 Warpsmith ones – including the ability for a Warpsmith to make any Chaos Vehicle pass any Out of Action tests after a battle! D'vok is pissed, realizing pretty much all of his Marines are dead, his demon engines destroyed, his mortals slain and he himself wounded. The Rangers bring a different energy to the Aeldari part of the box compared to their allies: a coolness, a quiet stoicism, that of a berath held before the pull of a trigger – but this energy doesn’t quite match that of the other Aeldari in the box.
