His previous books include The Complete Gardener, the Sunday Times bestsellers Nigel and My Garden World, The Jewel Garden with Sarah Don, and Japanese Gardens with Derry Moore, which was shortlisted for the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards.

The nation’s favourite gardener’ – Guardian ‘There was nothing here that could possibly be described as a garden.

A firm favourite with viewers, Monty's infectious enthusiasm for plants, attention to the finer details of gardening technique and easy charm have seen the ratings soar. Across two sites separated by a hedged path we have a mixture of raised beds, larger beds and some surrounded by low woven fences that are halfway between the two. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. Seasonably cold with temperatures somewhere between -10 and + 5 centigrade, is healthy for the garden and makes life easier for us gardeners.

I love his show and how he presents information but it is not always applicable to my living conditions. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. There is a a real sense of the garden coming magnificently into being but still rich with the promise of more to come. From the beginning of the book you get a real sense that Longmeadow is a very special place to the author. While items such as when to sow certain seeds needs to be adjusted for my climate, the task itself is the same. But when it is wet for weeks and we do not see the sun at all for days on end then it is miserable and gardening dribbles to a soggy halt.

It’s hard to pick a favorite between this and Down to Earth, both are equally good for their own reasons. I particularly liked the relaxed feel to the book, maybe this is because the author is self-taught and has no hang-ups about how things should be done. I would certainly recommend this book, Monty’s enthusiasm is infectious and you don’t need to watch Gardeners’ World to find this book useful and a good read. badge_secondary": "1rem", "badge_average_score": "2rem", "reviews_card_secondary_font_size": "1rem", "star_summary_reviewsnum_font_size": "1.
