Gelli is a small settlement in the community and parish [1] [2] of Llawhaden, Pembrokeshire, Wales, at the confluence of the Syfynwy and Cleddau Ddu rivers. We recommend you protect your work surface by placing your gel printing plate on a smooth, flat, non-porous barrier such as a Teflon® sheet, baking tray or piece of glass. The gel plate will leak a small amount of harmless mineral oil when left sitting on an absorbent surface.

Oil paints can be cleaned from the gel printing plate with baby oil and wiped clean with a paper towel. It is a great way to create original fabric to use in quilts and hangings, but it is just as versatile on paper.

Roman finds in the uplands of Glamorgan are scarce, but the settlement at Hen Dre'r Gelli, excavated in 1903, is the only undefended settlement of its type in the Rhondda. Do not cover gel printing plate with plastic wrap or waxed paper as these wraps will wrinkle and imprint on your gel printing plate.

If you haven’t already heard of Gelli Plates, they’re reusable, durable printing plates that allow you to mono-print without a press. The village of Gelli takes its name from a farm that was once found in the area, which translates from the Welsh language roughly as 'small wood or copse'. Gelli is a village in the Rhondda Fawr valley, in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taff, Wales, situated on the southern bank of the Rhondda Fawr River. This is a self guided course consisting of series of videos taking you through the basics of gelli-plate printing, exploring some of the fun ways you can use this technique. We recommend keeping the original pieces of clear plastic film and replacing them on the gel plate for storage.Gelli Bridge, immediately to the east of Gelli, spans the Syfynwy a few yards before it joins the Eastern Cleddau and is Grade II listed; it is listed twice (with different IDs and dates) because it falls within two parishes. Their advanced formula offers a delightfully squidgy surface—all without any animal products or latex. Archeological finds in the area have provided proof of earlier populations, mainly Bronze Age, though Gelli does house one of only two definite Romano-British finds in the Rhondda Valleys. Before the industrialisation of the area there were few settlements in the area, mainly small agricultural and farm buildings. These Gelli Arts Gel Printing Plates have an extremely sensitive surface and will imprint any texture they are sitting on or covered with - avoid plastic wrap, waxed paper or glossy photo paper!

Gelli-plate printing is one of my favourite techniques, giving fabulous results both expected and unexpected. We tried lots of other techniques with our Gelli Plate too, such as drawing into the paint with the end of a paintbrush, graduating the paint in stripes on the plate, and overlaying lots of different textures on top of one another.
