Jeffrey was expelled for being caught smoking behind the cricket locker rooms (the misunderstanding being that he was set on fire, not that he was smoking cigarettes). This began with two Sherlock Holmes continuation novels, The House of Silk and Moriarty, followed by my entry into the world of James Bond with Trigger Mortis. Talking about the success of his other books, Alex Rider, Horowitz thanked Rowling for her contribution to the development of the young adult fiction in the UK.

The humour is wicked and I am not sure about the early bits of humour, which seem to revolve around extreme forms of domestic violence. He also uses a couple characters at random points throughout the book to expound upon the horrors of Christianity--one character is a priest that Horowitz treats with a negative bias that completely breaks the narration.

An original thriller, Magpie Murders was published last year and got some of the best reviews I've had. It wasn’t the ghosts, ghouls and vampires he should have been scared of – it was the bankers, the priests, the middle-aged married couples.

Some of this dark humour is pretty close to the bone, with depictions of domestic violence and child abuse; it’s a deft hand that can pull this off and Horowitz does this with aplomb (à la Roald Dahl – another childhood favourite), turning it into an almost Grand Guignol over-the-top satire on modern living. Kilgraw, the vampire speaking to David to convince him to join them in their witch coven school: "All right, I admit it. David Eliot, after being kicked out of his private school is sent to a new private school, Groosham Grange. Harry Potter todavía no se publicaba y la Granja Groosham fue la primera vez que me encontré con una escuela poco usual y que se quedó en mi corazón. On route to his new school, he befriends Jill and Jeffrey and through their discussion it seems that they had each received a letter with differing information to portray this school ideally for their parents. All these spooky ingredients added up to a delicious and tense read for my child-self and I devoured it. When David Eliot is expelled from his boring school, his parents send him to Groosham Grange to knock him into shape.

I find that portraying the main friendship of the book as male/female is excellent to focus in on gender dimensions as primary school children are often male versus female but this book challenges that idealogy.
