Hey Graham, in terms of ankle support and a wide toe box, the Razorback is definitely your best bet. when i used to wear leather boots i used nixwax or grangers g-wax as above used to light the wax as i do with boot polish till runny put the lid back on to put out flame and then apply with the corner of an old cloth.
