About this deal

It’s so weird to see folks praise the sound in review after review, right alongside recommendations to change the pads. Am I confident that it’ll be around for the long run to keep improving on the foundation that this generation started? Upper midrange notes are clear and accurate, and lower voices come through well thanks to the modest boost from 100-200Hz. So I was looking for something I could use to give me a clear idea of the actual, non coloured, sounds that I was recording and mixing.

As far as the high end goes, both offer good presence there but the M50X sounds a little bit more forward in the lower part of the high end, and can sometimes feel like too much to me when the volume is really cranked up, depending on what you’re listening to. Both of these headphones will provide a clear, crisp sound for either casual listening purposes or studio usage. That's the headphone on all of Sonic Sense that sounds literally so close to the reference material that you need a seroiusly trained ear to hear the VERY slight coloration to the sound vs.

Delivering exceptional audio clarity with supreme comfort and usability, the ATH-M40x Headphones will make tracking and mixing a pleasure, developing your skills with comfort and confidence! While the frequency response isn’t going to tell us exactly how these are going to sound, it does help paint a picture of what to expect from the balance of the sound throughout the spectrum. On one hand, they do fold and rotate similar to a 50x, but they are definitely cheaper and feel flimsier. A little smaller and a lot cheaper than the excellent M50X model, but with similarly clear, balanced performance. In other words, they twist and contort in many of the same ways as the 50x, but don’t actually rotate towards you.

While I can’t earnestly say I would prefer this over the Steam Deck, I also cannot deny that my innate feelings are that it is in the same tier of quality in terms of what you can do with it. When using them to record a podcast, the Kraken headphones leaked enough that my mic picked up my co-host’s speech through them, causing an annoying echo that must have been a pain to edit out (thankfully, I didn’t have to do the editing! This product includes interchangeable coiled and straight cables, a carry pouch and a 1 / 4" jack adapter for universal compatibility. These headphones do not have any active noise cancellation, but they do dampen the noises around you simply because your ears are inside them.

You’ll notice it starts to sound Sibilant, essy, and metallic after a while, and there’s an air of artificiality that I can’t quite reconcile here. The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x, ATH-M30x, and ATH-M50x all share a similar silhouette, with the logo size and accent as the most notable aesthetic difference. Because the pads are faux leather and somewhat cheap, they tend to get very hot and collect perspiration over extended sessions. This headset hardly quiets low-frequency sounds like a plane engine or the droning din of a train car. Examples of things that sound more forward on the M50X would be heavily distorted rhythm guitars, the attack on toms, the snappiness of snare drums, and even some vocals depending on the voice. All the frequencies sound about right, especially the bass does not seem to be boosted, which is great.

The ATH-M30x bass and midrange under-emphasis (150-800Hz) is more dramatic than the ATH-M40x similar under-emphasis. I don’t find either to be particularly comfortable when sitting around my neck but the M50X fits a little better since I can lay the ear cups flat against myself instead of pointing them outward. The M40X is remarkably good for its specific stated purpose, and remarkably average for anything outside that narrow window. The Razer headphones were not made for studio use, but these Audio-Technica ATH-M40x headphones are. To get isolation similar to the chart above, you need to properly fit the ear pads around your ears to block out background noise. With a closed back, collapsible design, the M40x provides style and substance for the studio - pick up, plug in and play with complete reliability.
