About this deal

I played tracks from my own FLAC library as well as from Tidal streaming service (HiFi/Master Quality). Moreover, the headphones sound good playing directly from the OnePlus 3 but resolution and energy is lost. that adds some audible glare and also emphasizes some of the “honky” quality I mentioned in the midrange. I have said before that it is possible to mix music on any headphone of speaker system (within reason) as long as you get to know and learn to read what you are using. This is not "exposing weaknesses in the ancillary gear", it is an exposed weakness in the gear (DT1990) itself.

Like the DT 990 Pro, these two qualities in particular make the DT 1990 Pro an outstanding option for those looking for an open-back solution for gaming, especially for first-person shooters. Personally, I find the Focal Clear's 6kHz and 9kHz peaks more annoying and triggering my treble sensitivities. The DT1990 Pro only comes in 250 ohms of impedance, however Beyerdynamic seems to have tuned the headphone to work easily with a variety of sound systems. There's a reason why audio professionals use Beyerdynamic products, and it's down to that each pair of headphones have been articulately crafted to enable users with a lifetime of exceptional performance. Both DT990 and DT1990 sounds very good, however when listening to song with rice shaker with DT990 I have troubles to indentify hi-hat or shaker or whats goin on in there. The DT 1990 Pro’s are aimed more for studio use, which I am unfamiliar with–they might be amazing for that application. The headphones are also open-back and show off that fact with intricate offset cuts into the side of each ear cup.

Short recap: if you need a pair of reference headphones for your home studio and those are in your budget, definitely get them! The bass and midrange response isn’t nearly as accurate as with the DT 900 PRO X, but Audio-Technica’s headphones are half the cost. However, getting it to the point where I find it enjoyable and close to my personal target curve requires a lot of EQ. Both of the included sets of pads provide plenty of comfort, and they use an unbelievably soft velour. Analytical ones gives you much flatter frequency response where Balanced ones are for making 1990’s little more exciting with added low-end. The first one is that it adds what sounds like what I can only describe as shimmer to whatever you listen to. You if you have hearing loss, say a null at 6k from riding motorcycles for 20 years without hearing protection, then you don't need a hearing aid to hear the full frequency in music.

Listeners who want excellent sound quality in a slightly more portable package that costs less than the DT 1990 PRO should get this.Weight is 370 grams, so depending on which headphone you're coming from, this can take some getting used to (i. Head stage width is about average to slightly above average - meaning stage width reaches my shoulders and can move past it a bit. Though these headphones come with a nice carrying case, it’s more a way to get it from one desk to another rather than taking it out for a quick listen on the subway. Listening to things like piano keystrokes, guitar string plucks or xylophone strikes, they all have a good sense of pressure and tension behind. The DT 1990 PRO Tesla headphones' optimized spatial sound reproduction makes them a reliable reference for mixing and mastering applications.

As also I said above, turning down that treble peak removes the masking effect and presents micro-detail as good as even the Focal Clear - which is already an established resolving headphone. However, due to the peak which is in question, I feel that the DT1990 moves the focus point on to a different part of the spectrum, highlighting (perhaps too much) this frequency range which causes it to seem incorrect to those who listen for pleasure while perhaps making it easier for someone who is working on the production of the music. Switching pads for the first time is an exercise in frustration, but you’ll quickly learn the best technique to rotate the pads to get them to seat properly. To my ears, dropping that 8kHz peak does make the signature slightly darker and losing the airy feel, but NOT at the expense of losing resolution nor making the head stage smaller. One point though, I find there is less masking effect with the 6kHz dip, so I can sort of determine micro-details slightly better on the BP than the AP.This “shimmer” is what I think contributes the most to the perception that the DT 1990 Pro is a highly-detailed headphone. That said, my perceived sense of auditory space when listening to these headphones wasn’t as good as expected.
