Yonatan becomes a Rabbi and adheres to the strict social and religious protocols of the conservative faith.
After we were in the church, I mounted all her furniture on the wall, so that she can`t block the door again. ABOMINATION would be classed as contemporary fiction, but I can tell you, it was a stressful read that had the intensity of a thriller – page after page, I needed to know what was happening, where is this going, how will our protagonists fair, what choices will they make? I was drawn to this book by a morbid fascination of fundamentalist religious communities, in this case ultra-Orthodox Jews. This is skirting convention a little, because even though many haredim (ultra-orthodox) want to reach out to assimilated Jews (particularly men), the truth is small-minded gossip tends to win out in the community, especially when a gentile girlfriend is involved.
My colleagues at work are happy, because our boss is happy and haven’t got any problems at home and with his family. The fact that both his pregnant wife and her brother effectively endorse the community’s position makes the situation worse for him. The insular ultra-Orthodox Jewish community did harbour and support a suspected child abuser and excommunicate the family of the victim.

I prevent Martha the contact with her sister because she is a worthless person and not exemplary for Martha. The pacing was excellent, and there was a really tense and suspenseful atmosphere which I really enjoyed, and I'm looking forward to reading another piece of Swindell's work that is on my university summer reading list! Their rules dominate Martha's life, and one rule is the most important of all: she must never ever invite anyone home. Taunted and bullied at school, and lonely at home with only postcards from her elder sister to keep her sane, Martha knows there has to be some other way of living. You have to work so hard as you can in next month, otherwise our company close forever and you will lost your job forever. It helps that the stories are quite short as I think he finds it less daunting to tackle a thiner book. Their loyalty to each other makes the bad things they experience bearable and I, as the reader, hope their bond will last forever. That said, it wasn’t nearly as ubiquitous as it is now, and I can’t imagine what it would be like for children today to have to navigate the expectations of the online world in addition to their day-to-day tribulations. I Finished this book because I'm on the lookout for a book To read with my students and this seemed like a good choice.
Having read Swindells' Stone Cold in school, I decided to read Abomination, which I enjoyed even more! Feeling like he doesn’t quite fit in, Ezra is plagued by anxiety, self-doubt, and constant troubling thoughts. Martha is an outsider, bullied and abused by the other kids at school because she wears 'odd' clothes that her mother makes for her. I mean, it was obvious I liked her a lot, but surely you don't think about somebody every minute of the day and night just because you like them. It's a little earlier in time around the 1980's maybe 90's around the time when people first started computers in their homes. Due to being part of the Righteous, Martha struggles to fit in with everyone else and even has to face torment in her school for being so “different”.
Whatever my intentions were when writing the book, what the actions and inactions of different characters meant to me, none of that matters now. Set in Melbourne’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, it tells the tale of two friends who go to school together in the late 1990s but drift apart as adults. The juxtaposition of the secular way of life and ultra orthodox makes the novel equal parts relatable and enlightening. While Ezra and Yonatan have different lifestyles, they both grapple with crises of culture, values, and secrets. She has volunteered as a docent at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County teaching the all- important lessons of the Holocaust and tolerance. As far as Yonatan’s narrative goes, I don’t want to give too much away but there’s a questioning of faith there, and that questioning is mine—not for the same reasons as Yonatan, of course. For me, I think it’s fair to say that my questioning of faith was more gradual, and a product of many influences both inside and outside of Judaism. More, I love that it is local, written and based in Melbourne, and yet reveals a world previously unknown to me.
