Visual support is effective: each book opens with an impressive two-page photograph; subsequent pages include large pictures, inset images, and size comparison diagrams, with captions and labels included where needed. I mention it here because its section on breeding salamanders uses the Axolotl as the main example, and in so doing, gives a reasonable account, if not completely accurate (its mention of metamorphosing axolotls is rather disturbing in its approach, since it assumes that any axolotl can metamorphose). Books from other countries, cultures, viewpoints, and storytelling traditions can open up a universe of possibility, and the wider our view, the more powerfully books enrich and expand us. This addition to Keating's The World of Weird Animals shares some adorable lesser known animals with young readers. This is the kind of book that is great fun to page through, quote from to unsuspecting nearby people, and savor the bits of knowledge. However, since Cute as an Axolotl implies that the animals selected by Jess Keating, that the animals described and featured in her text are supposed to appear as endearing, as potentially lovable and thus obviously also as sweet looking, sorry, but far too many of David DeGrand's pictures really are not what I would personally consider as cute and cuddly (with some of the illustrations, such as his renditions of the Quokka and the Pygmy Hippopotamus actually appearing even as potentially a bit frightening to very sensitive readers). Not set up for being read aloud, but a great springboard for further investigation on any of the animals mentioned, conservation efforts, or the "science of cute.
