About this deal

In 2007, the composer Charles Wuorinen approached Proulx with the idea of turning her short story "Brokeback Mountain" into an opera. Kristi Coombs (who played the youngest orphan Molly in the first national touring company) then played Annie until this touring company closed in Hawaii on August 22, 1982. It reminded me of some of the Scottish fiction I’ve been reading recently, but from an Irish perspective. We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, waters, skies and communities.

Drawing on more than 40 years of work, including photojournalism made for Rolling Stone magazine in the 1970s and conceptual portraits for Vanity Fair and Vogue, Leibovitz selected iconic images and also photographs that have rarely, if ever, been seen before. Their disparate achievements work together to illuminate something perennially fascinating about Ernaux: her relationship to revelation and visibility. The novel follows an earlier concept for the play where the story took place over a greater span of time.

After a week of performances, Vigard was replaced by Andrea McArdle, who had been playing one of the other orphans, Pepper. The show proved to be a success, and so for the first two tours and the Malaysian Genting Highlands Production, the role of Annie was then shared by Faye Spittlehouse and a young Lucy May Barker. But when she meets Annie, a beautiful whirlwind of a woman, and brings her to the Town, she finds that she doesn't know nearly enough about her.Replacements in the role of Miss Hannigan included Alice Ghostley, Dolores Wilson, Betty Hutton, Marcia Lewis, and June Havoc. Maybe you'll read it again and again, or perhaps years from now you'll suddenly remember the moment it made you laugh or cry or simply see things differently. This novel contains many scenes and characters which had to be cut from the stage musical, which are interesting to read and imagine what they might have been like on the stage. Proulx published her first short-story collection, Heart Songs, in 1988 and her first novel, Postcards, in 1992. She begins to question the cultural assumptions of her island world; at school she makes rebellious friends and frequently challenges authority; and most frighteningly, her mother, seeing Annie as a 'young lady', ceases to be the source of unconditional adoration and takes on the new and unfamiliar guise of adversary.
