About this deal

I really thought that was why the unnamed soldiers were there – to give a sense of mortal danger without actually killing anyone important.

Anyway, Aedan asks one of the teachers – Giddard – if he deserves to be here and Giddard’s like, “Yeah, you good. It is a coming of age story and much of the narrative follows Aeden's training to become a Marshall at a military Academy. Granted, I don’t see any people in front of me as I type away at this computer screen, but, even if I were seeing any of the people who read my blog, I don’t think I’d see any hands. In the beginning of the chapter Aedan is going around the city with his friends and other soldiers – including Cameron the guard that Aedan met when he first arrived to Castath – dressing up as women and other easy-looking victims so the hooligans will try to attack them, then they’d take the hooligans down instead.

No doubt Renshaw just thinks of Aedan as clever and mischievous, much like Locke from The Lies of Locke Lamora. I know that this is something other readers will love as the schooling part of a fantasy book is, in my opinion, always a winner - think Roke from Le Guin's Earthsea, Hogwarts from Rowling's Harry Potter, the University from Rothfuss's Kingkiller Chronicles. Dawn of Wonder’s examination of this aspect works on some levels but there are at least some caveats. Though he hadn’t grown any bigger, something else was different – he could still feel the heat in his chest and a curious tingling in his fingers and occasionally his toes; it also felt at times as if his hand and feet were surrounded by water rather than air.And seeing him open up to his friends – especially since we haven’t been able to delve deep into their characters – is incredibly cathartic. Chapter 51 is when they first go into Kultûhm, and that chapter starts on page 551 – roughly 75 pages ago. Kalry frowned at Aedan and opened her mouth to speak, but he fixed her with a stare and shook his head.
