About this deal

It's got to be something specific - my last house was 150 years old, single-skin brick in parts, with a damp old cellar, and a suspended timber floor, so you would expect that to be draughty, but it was nothing like this!

I can't really answer based on experience of doing the job you describe, but I know roughly what you are talking about as your house sounds a lot like mine. My last remaining theory is this, and I wonder if anybody can back me up on this, or laugh me out of town. Punching the nails in wasn't without it's hazards either especially if electric cables passing through the joists below were in the top third of the joist. I think ply is worthwhile if you are putting down vinyl flooring or "lino" otherwise the edge board and gaps will cause wear lines. Manufactured from flexible V-shaped plastic that springs apart to fill gaps from 1-8mm, easily pushed into the gap using a debit card or similar tool, once in place the draught excluder is invisible.I think this as when I have taken the skirting off the plaster does not extend below the board by much at all. That’s because not only are fitting or inserting the filler yourself, your will even create the filler liquid yourself. My question is: Can I insulate this gap to stop the cold air getting behind the new skirting OR is there meant to be air behind the skirting to allow 'breathing? DraughtEx floorboard gap filler has been cleverly manufactured with thousands of tiny, concealed air pockets which allow it to be compressed by almost 90% of its original profile. A traditional DIY method of filling gaps between floorboards is making papier-mâché from shredded newspaper and wallpaper paste.

Would need to be really soft so that it can be compressed enough to not leave a gap between the flooring and skirting. Traditional floorboard gap filling techniques and products are time consuming, messy to install and will often fall out over time. I used to punch the nails partially through the boards and then lever them up with a thin bolster type chisel. The underlay joints should also be sealed, in my experience not all carpet layers can be bothered to do this. Alternatives to the tube-like rolls, which are pushed into floorboard gaps, are thin V-shaped, one-size-fits-all, plastic lengths that spring apart when pushed into place using a credit card.Apart from destroying the patina, the surface can be destabilised – for example wood-boring beetle larvae may have been busy tunnelling below the surface and if you take off the top layer the unsightly, worm-ridden wood will be on view.

Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Cold air flowing in from either the outside, or an unheated area of the house will cause you to feel cold and turn your heating up. Om you r house my thinking is that there could have been plaster behind the skirting, or there could have been a gap behind the skirting, I don't suppose either are great insulators, but air would be better than plaster especially if the plaster is a bit damp. This gap filler is easy and quick to push between the floorboards, however as gaps between floorboards tend to be inconsistent in size you will need to make sure you purchase various thicknesses and during application switch from one thickness to the other as the gap size changes. If the item comes direct from a manufacturer, it may be delivered in non-retail packaging, such as a plain or unprinted box or plastic bag. Small gaps between the floorboards soon add up to a large area, perhaps the same size as a medium window, which when left open, day and night you’re sure to feel the draught and certainly wasting energy.
