About this deal

For a panicked moment I think I left it at school, but when I push aside my natty sketchbook and some French comics, I find it. I'm hoping for possibly more side queer characters going into the next book that have a more central role in Danny's life, but ultimately I loved the collection of characters we got in this book so I am still super pleased. So long, florid descriptions of characters and scenes and battle sequences leave little impression on me. On top of her hunt for Utopia, she juggles the new friction with her friend David who believes she’s his chance for a date, her abusive father’s mounting pressure to “fix” her body, and the reaction from Legion Pacifica when they learn the new Dreadnought is a trans girl. For all books bought and read for Sapphic Readers Book Club, I will be hosting a giveaway for each book after I read it.

There is little time to unpack any of them so the barrage of abuse feels both pornographic and hyperbolic at the same time. Featuring a vibrant rainbow design, and our super-sized Q logo, you won't find a more stylish way to make a statement. The characters are flat, the story is boring, the writing isn’t good and some passages pushed all my wrong buttons. Vigilantes are not — to put it kindly — unheard of in New Port City, but I've never heard of one my own age. However some of the reviews I’ve seen for it make me think it suffers from the same issues with generalizing and stereotypes.I kind of predicted a few of the twists, thanks I’ll say to foreshadowing much earlier in the book, but some of them were new. No, I’m sorry, if one day one of my male friend turns up in a female body, I would have a bit more questions, like “what happened to you dude? It’s not that the terrible things that happen to Danny don’t occur in real life, but they are so squished together to get the plot rolling that these important emotional moments feel contrived. Danny also mentions several times throughout the book that she’s subject to more emotional highs and lows because of estrogen, and that her feelings have been unlocked now that she’s a girl. One day, while painting her toenails behind a supermarket, she finds herself in the middle of a fight between two superheroes and it ends quite badly for the good guy.

The narrative doesn’t shy away from the terrible things that trans people face in their daily lives, but Danny is a survivor and she never gives up. Charlie Jane Anders, author of All the Birds in the SkyDanny Tozer has a problem: she just inherited the powers of Dreadnought, the world's greatest superhero.Keep in mind that Dreadnought is less than 300 pages—there is a lot of character development going on here for a slim book! In the world of Dreadnought, people with powers (metahumans, is the term) are actually fairly common, though only a small proportion of them have the juice and desire to become “capes”.

The cowgirl finds me sitting with my head in my hands on the concrete lip that separates the space under the ramp from the empty space behind the mall. But she’ll have to survive Union intrigue and Confederate opposition to make it off the Dreadnought alive.

For example, as an eight-year-old the future Kaiser, who had a withered left arm due to damage from forceps suffered at birth, was made to take riding lessons, and "[o]ver and over" per the supervising tutor, the "'weeping prince' was 'set on his horse, without stirrups and compelled to go through the paces. This breaks Danny’s isolation, which arguably does more to further Danny’s emotional transition than the superpowers that make Danny feel invulnerable. She doesn’t appear again until the second half and some of what Danielle and Calamity uncover hint at a sympathetic villain: example, her raids for high-grade medical equipment. My major criticism is that it is too short, and that having read it so soon after its release I now have to wait far too long to read the sequel.

Pure genius … I’m not exaggerating the potential of Priest’s Clockwork Century’ Paul Goat Allen, ‘Exceptional . Danny has to find this villain and discover how she managed to kill the supposedly invincible Dreadnought, so Danny won’t be next on the hitlist.

H. Asquith, speaking of meeting her husband after the last efforts to avert war had failed, we are given, "I sat down beside him with a feeling of numbness in my limbs.
