About this deal

This phenomenal thriller digs into murder, secrets, volatile family relationships and high school friendships from 40 years ago. I had my own suspicions which were eventually proved right but that did not take away from the gripping nature of this superb novel.

This was someone who went from being rather naïve to someone who found their inner strength to fight for themself and their baby. The usual monthly party the five friends held, at one of the homes and without parents, was a blackout situation for Emily. I highly recommend the book to anyone who has read and enjoyed other books written by Ms Slaughter, or who enjoys a good murder mystery/suspense novel. emily’s timeline was so interesting and kept me intrigued, i wish the whole book had just followed her instead of that boring detective shit. When an elderly judge receives death threats Andrea gets assigned her first job as a US Marshal in the town of Longbill Beach, Delaware. Her parents are rather neglectful and abusive in their own ways, and the only person who offers her unconditional love and support is her Gram.

Pieces of Her is a Netflix original series starring Toni Collette, and False Witness, the Grant County, and Will Trent series are in development for television. But in practice there’s an obvious drawback; Laura Oliver’s role has been massively reduced in this sequel. The group had been close until a drug fuelled party lead to Emily becoming pregnant without knowing how that had happened. With Emily, we go back six months before the prom as she learns of her pregnancy and the innocence of her youth begins to be stripped away. She hasn’t become a deputy marshal due to a burning desire for justice, but rather as a protective measure against her father. At the beginning of ‘Girl, Forgotten‘, Andy is just about to graduate as a US Marshall, much to the chagrin of her mother. This was a BOTM pick last February that I just hadn't gotten to, and even though I didn't love this one, I've still loved most my Book of The Month picks recently.

The deciding factor is likely going to come down to whether or not Andrea Oliver is a strong enough character to carry a series on her own. Of course, it is perfectly possible that readers familiar with book one may have been able to appreciate certain elements more fully, but Karin Slaughter does a perfectly decent job of introducing the essential background information into the narrative, so that new readers are put suitably in the picture. At the same time, she’s trying to solve the cold case of Emily Vaughn, a pregnant teenager who was brutally murdered forty years prior. She is learning from her mistakes, she is seeing things from different perspectives, she’s showing how smart she is and she is determined to bring her first assignment to a good end. I really enjoyed watching her trying to find her feet in her newly chosen career and learning the ropes from her partner, Bible, who is the absolute bee’s knees! I read Pieces of Her in 2019 and I remember thinking reading more books with Andrea and Mike in it was something I was down with.
