I wish I would have started my setup with this feeder--maybe the rats wouldn't have gone condo on me. Grandpa's Feeders are the original automatic chicken feeders and they have been made and sold for over Twenty Years. The feeders come with 2 training bolts to limit movement and instructions for their use: 2 settings with one week on each setting. Unfortunately, it’s been my experience that I’ve needed to do more maintenance with this feeder than the older one I had.

So they have been around since the start and have built a good reputation and have really great reviews. However, we do have rats that visit (and carefully avoid the poison bait stations ), and the hens chuck the food everywhere and make a dreadful mess. Say goodbye to pesky rats, mice and wild birds as they are too light to weigh down the platform and open the feeder. The part that shoves the door open has a fatal flaw as well, it is thin for its purpose and quite flimsy.

For each major rain that we’ve had, I’ve had to flush out the food and clean out the food container.

I genuinely only recommend products that I have bought myself and love, or that someone I know and trust has and loves. Update about my neighbour's GF is that it has started to stick open - probably because of dirt and/or feed and/or corrosion affecting the hinges so beware of that after a while (she's had it about 12 - 18 months) Make sure you keep it clean around the moving parts! There is no heavy counterweight and no spring, and the mechanism itself is fairly balanced so there is no resistance to prevent a mouse or rat from simply pushing the lid up and climbing in. The lady that posted the video originally said the first time she noticed it there were 21 rats that boiled up out of it when she opened it.The Standard size is suitable for all chickens, pheasants and is designed for smaller flocks of up to 12 chickens.
