I like this model very much, but I don’t see a good reason why would you spend almost twice the amount of money over ZSN. Judging the clarity and soundstage – ZSN, ZS6 and ZS10 are in a class of their own – while ES4 and ZSA are more muffled and cluttered in comparison. Contrary to other headphones, though, it is not overly present or overwhelming, though it can take the top spot when the track played already has a large amount of bass in the mix. Bass is deep but not overwhelming, mids are decently neutral and clear but not highs were not overpowering anymore. The shells are almost identical: coloured transparent plastic exposing the internal PCB and drivers. The in-ear design combined with the correct ear tips will seal your music in and leave the external noise out. The KZ ES4 is still plagued by a superficial tuning job that does not unchain the true potential of the drivers.

KZ ZSA: in terms of technicalities, the ZSA are very similar to the ES4: instrument separation is largely comparable, while soundstage appears slightly larger on the ZSA. If it has anything in common with the ES3, it will have to be in the sound department because in looks, it’s a baby Zs10. With the ear hook, they won’t fall out easily and you are able to walk, run, bike, or do whatever you want with the KZ ES4 without them falling out of your ears. With our standardized equalization and amplification tests we push the limits of the earphones to the extreme. That said they are still on the analytical side of things and not as full as you can hear on Sennheisers for example.

One thing I also noticed is that the nozzle is bigger on the top, so they should have better grip on eartips – that’s something new from KZ, considering how they usually go for straight nozzles. I have spoken to the new KZ cable in a couple of previous reviews but for those who might not have read about it yet, the cable is a step up in microphonics and isn’t nearly as sticky as the previous KZ standard.

Even more surprising – there’s a decent midrange too which is more fluid and juicier than I ever heard on KZ model before. The sound signature is balanced, consistent from top to bottom, with good deep solid bass, clear mids and nice highs. Like the previous KZ products we had ( KZ AS10, KZ ZS6 and KZ ZS10), the KZ ES4 come in a white packaging with a outlined picture of the earbuds on front.

The smaller ones, the metal premium feel finish ones… they’re also cheaper than ZS10 but matching and even maybe slightly surpassing them in overall clarity and presence. Their peculiarity is the double colour scheme, where the faceplate is black and the rest of the housings is red; they’re made of metal and appear fairly solid. The form factor of the earpieces share some of the curvy shapes of the KZ ZST and KZ ZS10 but have a rear housing’s design that (if seen flat) looks nearly identical to a guitar pick. The dual driver setup includes 1 balanced armature and one 10 mm dynamic driver, each driver will independently be responsible of reproducing different audio frequencies – the dynamic driver will take care of the lower end while the balanced armature will resolve mid and upper frequencies.
