About this deal

Founded in 1898, the family-owned toolmaker combines old-fashioned quality and craftsmanship with innovative design to create superior tools that last a lifetime. Longer and angled shafts help you bend less and will take the strain off of your back but it can take a while to adjust to the unusual digging angle.

Make sure these rivets are sunk or flush with the handle so that they don’t snag on your hands when turning the soil. The handle is comfortable and the wide treads stop the feet from slipping and protect boot soles from splitting on the blade. If it meets a stone or root as it cuts down through the soil, it simply passes the obstruction to the side, taking the hard work out of digging in hard or stony soils. Our stainless steel small Groundbreaker spade is endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society, perhaps the ultimate accolade in gardening. It is simply a great spade for all gardeners and is an affordable alternative to rival the Sneeboer pointed and transplanting spades. The Burgon and Ball RHS Endorsed Ladies Groundbreaker Spade is a super tough, good looking spade with pointed sharpened head for significantly easier digging and a FSC ash handle with comfortable ‘Y’ grip. You’ll find that this garden workhorse is great for so many gardening chores including turning your soil, mixing amendments into your soil and planting or transplanting trees and shrubs.

This garden spade is slightly smaller than our digging spade, making it ideal for digging in confined spades, or for gardeners who prefer to work with a shorter, lighter-weight tool. The blade is usually about 6-8 inches wide and 12-16 inches long, and is designed to be sharp enough to cut through soil and roots. This spade has been tested to a breaking strain of 90kg; far above and beyond the British standard of 55kg. However, the strapped socket and raised rivets on the shaft snag on hands when lifting and turning the earth, and testers felt the treads were too narrow to stop slipping on wet muddy digs. We have everything for the dedicated and occasional gardener alike, as well as providing great places to visit for a great cup of coffee and much more. Some spades are designed for general digging and planting, while others are specialised for tasks such as edging, trenching, or transplanting.

The spade should be held close to your body for control and to limit the amount you have to lean towards it to dig. The shaft and YD handle are crafted from FSC hardwood but the strapped socket and the rivets that attach it to the shaft catch on the handle occasionally when lifting plants or soil. Wide comfort treads at the top of the blade prevent any discomfort for feet, allowing you to really dig deep, in even the most challenging soil. They can also be made of different materials, such as steel or fiberglass, to suit different preferences and needs. The wooden handle has a long metal sleeve cover which gave me confidence to really get stuck in without the fear of it breaking. After each use, clean soil off the blade and handle as it can cause carbon steel to rust and wood to rot. Stainless steel blades are also always welded onto the socket, which creates a weak spot vulnerable to breaking under pressure.

Traditional wood is strong, heavy and absorbs shock and vibrations but it does not like the wet unless weatherproofed. The Burgon and Ball Groundbreaker Spade handle is crafted from FSC certified ash, which gives you peace of mind that the wood has been sourced from managed forests. The ash shaft and handle are made from one continuous piece of wood and the YD handle is capped with stainless steel to make it even more robust.
