A full-bodied and balanced bourbon, at once fresh, sweet and smoky, all delivered with a rich and rounded mouth-feel. I’ve always been a fan of Wild Turkey, especially the baseline 101 expression because it has always represented classic bourbon value to me.

The time-honoured process used to produce this whisky results in a spirit that is balanced, complex and exceptionally drinkable. Longbranch Bourbon was created in 2016 by Wild Turkey Master Distiller Eddie Russell and cultural tastemaker Matthew McConaughey. Lately, though, Wild Turkey has been trying to buck that reputation and compete with the (other) big names in bourbon by releasing special edition this and distiller’s own that, which initially struck me as a bit of a betrayal of the brand. I like how closely this hews to the Wild Turkey profile on the nose, though the palate mostly underdelivers, which I will attribute to the dilution down to 86 proof (43% ABV).Wild Turkey Longbranch Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a rare, small-batch Kentucky Straight bourbon refined with Texas Mesquite and oak charcoals. The addition of these ingredients creates a smoothness and subtle sweetness that sets Longbranch apart from other whiskeys. This is a vatting of 6 year old, 8 year old and 12 year old bourbons and there have been over 11 batches releases since it's inception. The unique filtration method deepens the flavour and complexity of the whiskey, giving this eight-year-old Wild Turkey bourbon notes of smoky sweetness.
