About this deal

But then it slowed down and tended to be same-old same-old and by the end I was sorta glad it was over and done with. Unfortunately, Miss Buncle had no imagination, so she wrote about her friends – quite kindly and truthfully, of course, for she was a benevolent and veracious soul. Humor, lightness of touch, the ability to plot an enthralling story in fascinating surroundings and to create characters that appeal, convincingly, both to head and heart. Those of us who work in publishing might seriously question the sanity of anyone trying to escape poverty by writing a novel, but hey, it works for Miss Buncle.

There are some serious moments, for example when the doctor’s children are, very briefly, kidnapped (as a way of trying to force their mother to admit that she wrote the book; which she did not). You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Funny, charming, and insightful, this novel reveals what happens when people see themselves through someone else's eyes. There are times when you feel like you're just strolling through the village and then there are times you feel you have just run the length of the village twice without stopping. Miss Buncle’s Book was the most popular of her novels because it has a completely original plot and a charming and delightful central character.Perhaps part of the attraction is that in DE Stevenson’s novels these rules comfortingly still apply. A sa grande surprise, le livre est publié - mais très vite les villageois s'indignent et s'interrogent sur l'identité de l'auteur. Written in 1936 and set in about that same time, Miss Buncle's Book captures the charm of life in a small English town and the various characters who live there, with all their foibles. It reminded me of the lovely book, Cold Comfort Farm which is a gentle satire against books like Tess of the d'Hurbervilles.

Miss Buncle has portrayed them as they are, and some take offence, particularly those who are not portrayed in a particularly bad light. It was all about loving your neighbour, and how you must seek out the good in people and only see the good.Stevenson's novels were best-sellers, with more than seven million copies printed and translations in multiple languages.

Miss Buncle's quiet little English village of Silverstream is therefor turned into the village of Cooperfield and the residents of Silverstream become thinly veiled characters in Miss Buncle's book, Disturber of the Peace. There are a lot of characters and the book within a book idea could have gotten messy and confusing but it thankfully didn't. Some of Miss Buncle's word association that I so liked and that was probably what made people start paying attention.Namely that most of the imaginary endings (marriage, travel, bigamous affair) for some of the very genuine people start to come true, while others -to avoid possible conclusions hinted at in the book (a ghost rising, a wife leaving her bullying husband) - decide upon mending their ways.
