About this deal

They have come together to witness the death of their mother and then to eat her afterwards based on the rules on the Cannibal principles with which they have been raised. om den är skriven på ett humoristiskt och groteskt sätt så tyckte jag den var superintressant och smart på ett Orwell-liknande sätt mer än att den var rolig. Though well-written and humorous, I feel the ability to enjoy this book is dependent on how much casual bigotry you can stomach before it stops feeling like satire and starts feeling excessive.

Ich habe es verschlungen und hoffe, dass es übersetzt wird, damit auch die deutsche Leserschaft hiervon zehren kann. The story is hilarious although it falls at the end with the deed only half done but reading thoroughly recommended. The novel is 260 pages with no chapter breaks in the narrative, although the text does have frequent pauses. Seventh Seltzer has done everything he can to break from the past, but in his overbearing, narcissistic mother’s last moments he is drawn back into the life he left behind.Of practical concern, she’s six-foot-two and weighs over thirty stone – even divided up between Seventh and his eleven brothers, that's a lot of red meat.

Mother for Dinner talks a chunk of cannibalism, and another good chunk of questioning the banality of identity.Little Zero (girl after my own heart) --felt that if somebody read this story 100 years from now and believed a word of it they would be idiots just like all the siblings.

Their names are unforgettable (as intended) but it depersonalises them, making them a complete unit rather than individuals. Their most sacred rites are proscribed by law (the first rule of Cannibal life, we’re told, is “NO COPS”), the media stereotypes them with comical images of bones through noses and bubbling pots, and their history is one of persecution, marginalisation and pursuit by torch-wielding mobs. Shalom Auslander hadn't then come to my attention since so I was delighted when I stumbled across this book. He never loved her, but the sense of guilt and responsibility he feels--to her and to his people and to his "unique cultural heritage"--is overwhelming. What follows is grotesque, extremely funny, weirdly touching and acute about families – and contains a thread of sensitive exegesis of Michel de Montaigne as well as some highly questionable aspersions both on the memory of Henry Ford and the still living person of Jack Nicholson (who, it’s claimed, is a Cannibal-American who betrayed his people by failing to thank them when he won an Oscar).Författaren själv växte upp i Monsey, New York, där många ortodoxa judar bor, och det märks att hans bakgrund varit viktig för berättelsen. Very funny satire described aptly by entertainment weekly as “like an unintentional bark of laughter at a funeral.

The novel does use our language of eating to great effect: Mudd will torment bullies by asking if they can have them for dinner, or telling children she’d like to gobble them up). As part of the (deliberate quotation marks) “journey,” we learn a great deal about the fractious family dynamic. sur un fond d’absurde, l’auteur questionne les croyances et les traditions qui nous constituent en tant qu’Homme. And anyone who has read Auslander before will know that when I say “applies his satirical scalpel”, I mean something more like “tosses a hand-grenade and runs away laughing” . Auslander, in interview, described his rejected ultra-orthodox upbringing as being raised “like veal,” and this novel captures and analyses the ambiguities around what one is given and what one is offered magnificently. She expects her 12 children, who are likely the last of the Cannibal kind, to carry on the tradition of eating her corpse after her death.
