About this deal

Meanwhile, Malik has come to the conclusion that the only way for him to get close to the princess is for him to be the champion of his alignment for Solstasia. Despite their intentions with each other they work very well together, their scenes were full of 🔥🥵🔥🥵 and they most definitely care about each other dispite what they'll tell you. But as soon as Karina sees her eyes, she knows that it could never have worked and that this being isn’t truly her sister, though it looks and sounds just like her.

If you are looking for something new and different in the world building of YA fantasy, especially one that’s influenced by non-European cultures, check this book out! The constant telling instead of showing, lack of interesting character motives and instalove made me feel disconnected from this story. So if you’ve got any other fantasy novels to recommend that are written by black/POC authors, please drop them in the comments, I read a lot of novels by white ladies, which is fine, but certainly not the only YA fantasy perspective out there and I really want to broaden my horizons.

But the main ingredient needed is the heart of a king, which Ziran has not had since her father died. He takes Malik’s sister Nadia prisoner and says he will only release her if Malik kills the princess by the end of Solstasia. Karina plans on using Malik and a couple of other people for the human sacrifice while Malik plans to kill her to save his sister. Still grieving the deaths of her father and older sister years ago, she feels stifled within the palace walls and increasingly dreads her eventual succession to the throne. Her father and older sister Hanane were killed in a fire ten years before, and Karina has been grieving them ever since. And she knows just how to obtain one: by offering her hand in marriage to the victor of the Solstasia competition.

I did have an overall good time reading this, though (especially loved all the lore and storytelling aspects). But she is fierce and independent and willing to stand up for what she believes in, never willing to back down from a challenge.During the scuffle, Malik and his sisters find themselves in a strange hut, where a powerful spirit manifests before them. But as far as I’ve read of tribal folk tales (which, like I admitted in the Anansi post, is ashamedly very little), they don’t tend to center around romance the same way that European fairy tales do.

Thinking only of bringing her mother back, Karina comes upon an ancient resurrection ritual that is said to raise the dead during the week of Solstasia. i really loved malik as a character, he was so soft and the rep for his anxiety was amazing but i didn’t really care for karina, i found myself dreading her characters because i feel like her character and her characters drive wasn’t conveyed well. But when a vengeful spirit abducts his younger sister, Nadia, as payment to enter the city, Malik strikes a fatal deal—kill Karina, Crown Princess of Ziran, for Nadia’s freedom. I also didn't like the writing, I'm not saying that the writing is bad but it's simply just not my thing. Shortly before her mother died, she met a young girl named Afua, who was the daughter of the Arkwasi ambassador, and she mentioned offhand a magical term on their meeting.
