About this deal

Although this book is about a lonely 28-y/o housewife, Ellen, she is not really your sex-starved character who sleeps with men from one bed to another.

The novel trundles in this direction long enough to lull you into a false sense of security but is swiftly overtaken by the harsher realities of life. I've read the trilogy's first book and I thought that O'Brien once again captured the inner feelings of women in Ireland during the time particularly their relationships with men and their place in society as a whole. This is not a book I will recommend to most people as many of my friends do not like unsavory characters and negative emotions.

while well written and know doubt bring pleasure to a lot of readers I did not enjoy reading it no criticism is intended reading and what someone else will enjoy is an almost impossible task due to the many variables that come into play. If you enjoy novels of the variety I mentioned earlier in my review, then this is definitely one you should read.An article published on the occasion of her 90th birthday ends like this: “There is still the hope too of one final book: “I do have one in mind but I’m not sure I have the energy or the existence to carry me through,” she says with a hint of regret. The copyright page states first published 1965 indicating the first edition, with copyright Edna O¿Brien 1965.

For more than 60,000 years, stories have formed, and continue to form, an integral part of the culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. However, she soon discovers that independence blurs into loneliness, especially when she receives some heart-breaking news . The title is regularly mentioned to this day by commentators on topics ranging from business and politics to fashion and weather. The Summer Before the Dark’ by Doris Lessing: A well-educated woman contemplates her future after 20 years of marriage and motherhood at a time when having a career wasn’t open to all. She languishes on in France where flirting now becomes a compulsive distraction as well as a physical need. I have only been this wrong about a book, once before, when I thought The Vet's Daughter by Barbara Comyns was a “light romance. BTW I couldn’t add this to your A Year of William Trevor page, and you’re on a break at Twitter, so here’s the link to Fools of Fortune (which I read this month to tie in with Cathy’s Reading Ireland month).
