About this deal

Craigellachie was built in 1891 by the experienced whisky team of Peter Mackie and Alexander Edward.

Our eco-friendly approach doesn't compromise on protection, ensuring your items are safe during transit. Whiskybase holds the answer and I’m satisfied it’s naturally presented, but even if it wasn’t I wouldn’t mind too much – it doesn’t have the Irn-Bru-like Aberlour Casg Annamh vibrancy to it. Would the Craigellachie be the same, or would there be a clearer difference between the two 13 year old expressions? Now allowed to shine in its own light, Craigellachie is shown to be a chunky, spicy single malt full of character. In Dramface’s efforts to be as inclusive as possible we recognise the need to capture the thoughts and challenges that come in the early days of those stepping inside the whisky world.Craigellachie 13 Year may be light in colour, but this beautifully crafted formula packs a punch when it comes to flavour. It’s also a heavy spirit in that it is thick and oily even at the standard official bottling strength of 46% ABV.

The Craigellachie 13 has a gorgeous caramel vanilla wave, albeit with a thinner tart edge, slight matchbox ping and a brighter zingy fruitiness. As the spirit bubbles away inside the still, it releases vapours which creep upwards after much refluxing and travel along the horizontal pipe at the top of the still – the lyne arm – to the zone where the gaseous spirit is converted back into a higher proof, liquid distillate. That’s a guess, though, I need to find more “sulfury” whiskies to taste and see if I can confirm it. With notes of rich fruits and a whisper of smoke on the palate, making it a delightful tipple for whisky lovers. The bourbon casks bring vanilla, toffee and fudge notes to the fore, and the sherry casks provide richness and complexity.Built by the stubborn Peter Mackie in 1891, the Craigellachie distillery was described as old-fashioned even at that time.

When I think of Speyburn I never think of heavy spirit but, in reality, I’ve had very little on which to form such an opinion, and it may well be influenced by final presentation when bottled. Please always read the labels, warnings, and directions provided with the product before using or consuming a product. This may affect factors including the product style and allergen information, and we would advise that you always check the label and not solely rely on the information presented here. A youthful nose, with creamy rice pudding as a top note, acidic tropical fruitiness in the middle (lychees, mangosteins, even a fugitive trace of pineapple), and the most subtle hint of smoke at the back. Unveiled in 2014 as part of the trio of official Craigellachie bottlings, their 13-year-old single malt Scotch whisky eloquently embodies the distillery's audacious and robust essence.
