While I found the book quite interesting, I have to say that I don't quite understand how Jodie could have dictated the letter she had left for Cathy. Despite her reservations, Cathy decides to accept Jodie to protect her from being placed in an institution. All of our books are completely brand new, aside from minor wear, tear and damage due to process and handling.

I did not have any books to read with me and not knowing any of the authors, I picked this one because it was the thinnest; there is a lesson for you there my friend. This book was made into a good film in 1992, starring Jeremy Irons, and it's probably his presence in that which reminded me of Lolita, as he appeared in the excellent remake of that film as well. I would like to start by saying that I'm quite a sensitive person, so I was a bit nervous going into it. Even though I suspected what had happened to Jodie, when it was revealed in the book, it sent not only dread but shivers of fear through me to know that this happens and is happening to children all over the world as we speak.

If you're like me and need it: trigger warning for self harm, child abuse, sexual abuse, rape and aggressive behaviour. When reading books of this nature I have generally only read from the point of view of the child, so this new perspective was very interesting. I didn't like Winterson's Written on the Body but I had to admit the book was clever + the poetic parts were quite well-written. If you read one book this year it should be this one, it's just so sad that help came too late to truly help Jodie. I noticed Cathy Class (pseudonym) has written several other books about other foster children she has cared for.

While the writing does come of as a bit self-congratulatory a lot of the time, the story is mesmerizing and if it is true, the author should be praised for her astounding patience. The writing is in a constant "i-am-trying-to-create-suspense-and-mystery" style which fails completely. At the Social Services office, Cathy (an experienced foster carer) is pressured into taking Jodie as a new placement. The vividly clear connection between early childhood trauma and adult physical and mental health issues is an education we all need. Her work is strongly identified with both the True Life Stories and Inspirational Memoirs genres, and she has also written a parenting guide to bringing up children, Happy Kids, and a novel, The Girl in the Mirror, based on a true story.
