The book is then packed with another 50 pages or so of 'resources' including the hilariously dated 'Bible on Audiocassette', which, honestly, I'm surprised made it into the updated version (the word is so old that my spell-checker is telling me I have it spelled incorrectly). To be fair, he spends the last 6 pages or so speaking on the disciplines in the context of grace and warning against legalism. The events following his repentance: his baby died, his daughter Tamar was raped by her half-brother Ammon, Ammon was murdered by Tamar's full brother Absalom, and Absalom (loathing his father for his moral turpitude) eventually came to lead a rebellion under the tutelage of Bathsheba's resentful grandfather, Ahithophel.

Kent Hughes does a great job of breaking down what it looks like to be a Godly Man and how men can apply these disciplines to our lives. The bare-knuckle command is "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.

This book was not only encouraging but also convicting, providing insight on how we tend to approach different situations, people, and God’s word. Again, chapters like being involved in church, giving money, and witnessing (evangelism) are typical and as expected.Hughes does an excellent job of breaking down the various types of discipline that are severally lacking in masculinity today and provides simple steps to practice to improve yourself and make yourself a more Christ honoring man. I really enjoyed Hughes' blend of Scripture, practical, personal examples and literature, poetry and other stories from the culture around us. There are some books, though very few, that remain ‘evergreen’―that through the years remain as useful and challenging as the day they were written. Well written and to the point, as it was written 2 decades ago it doesn't stray into the nonsense of today's gender confusion and I found that very refreshing.
