About this deal

I believe Russell must have filmed his connecting scenes some time ago, because he appeared some 15 to 20 years younger than he is now. Thankfully, the visuals here are much much better and sharper than the first time I watched the serial years ago. Behind the Sofa: New episodes with companions Maureen O’Brien, Peter Purves, Carole Ann Ford, Janet Fielding ( Tegan), Wendy Padbury ( Zoe), Sarah Sutton ( Nyssa), Bonnie Langford ( Mel) and Sophie Aldred ( Ace). For those in the US wondering, the Region A Blu-Ray release uses the EDITED R1 DVD print of The Chase. When choosing the updated effects on the DVD, it was never made clear if the new effects were on or off.

From their first step into the TARDIS in An Unearthly Child to their departure at the end of The Chase, the duo were involved in sixteen thrilling adventures that captured the imagination of a generation. A specially shot announcement trailer has debuted on the Doctor Who YouTube channel, written by new series contributor Pete McTighe ( Kerblam! In Conversation: two exclusive insightful feature-length interviews, with William Russell and Maureen O’Brien. From the rather blobby mire beasts on Arridia, to the not quite convincing American accents at the Empire State Building, to rather silly and OTT monsters at the haunted house, and the rather unconvincing Doctor duplicate, this felt a bit like a Dalek cash-in.A rare chance to hear from actors Jacqueline Hill and Adrienne Hill (Katarina) alongside Michael Craze (Ben) and Carole Ann Ford. There was far more hysterical screaming than there needed to be, especially for such an allegedly advanced and sophisticated teenager. It successfully introduces a new companion, features an impressive looking alien creature and delivers an unexpected twist.

Subsequent releases, starting with season 18, were put out in a slipcase style, with a grey sleeve replacing the interior card case, resulting in a loss of several pieces of artwork. We now know that Hartnell's exasperation and irascibility were a product of his increasing difficulty in memorising his lines, but at the time they were just perfect for the part. Such wizardry gives us such good detail, you can often see the seams and wrinkles in some background “skies” and the like — and I relish it. Episode titles: “World’s End”, “Day of Reckoning”, “The Daleks”, “The End of Tomorrow”, “The Waking Ally”, “Flashpoint”.The second season for William Hartnell's First Doctor is the next release to come to Blu-ray with Season 2. In the end, the only thing more chilling than seeing the Daleks on Skaro, was bringing them to Earth.
