About this deal

Amaco’s Rub 'n Buff Metallic Finishes are great for adding finishing touches to wood, plaster, pottery, metal, leather, or gessoed surfaces. I was very curious as I had tried the black and it was very gritty and couldn’t get a smooth result. You have more control over the finish at the end because you can buff it out until you get your desired look. We take intellectual property concerns very seriously, but many of these problems can be resolved directly by the parties involved. Never thought I’d be sitting at my office desk “trying on” Rub n Buff colors, but doing this little experiment was so helpful for me so I can reference all of the colors in the future, and I hope it helped you too.

The Harris family owners and staff of Gordon Harris are extremely proud that their business has not only survived four decades but grown from humble beginnings to become NZ’s largest and best known art supplies specialist.

NOTE: Do not use cleaners that contain solvents as these may cause the Rub 'n Buff to disperse into the carpet padding. You can experiment with the patina effect and go for more contrast by letting the base coat show through, or a subtler look by adding more layers of gold (including multiple colors, if you choose). Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. The spray paint I used looks horrendous and so I have just spent a half hour reading about rub and buff and all the various gold colors when I stumbled upon your blog. I used Rub n Buff to make this cheap light fixture look like a more expensive version from Pottery Barn.

Now that I’ve stumbled on your blog, I realize there are other colors that would have worked better. European Gold – The least saturated, cooler-toned of all of the Rub ‘n Buff golds, this shade is more of a champagne hue and is best if you want just a slightly gold tinted color. This step is only required if you want an aged/patina effect, but paint gives the Rub n Buff better adhesion and is a good idea for a slick surface. If this is not the color you need please check my other listings for the colors that best suit your projects.

This is a designer’s secret for an easy DIY to update the look of almost any solid surface without breaking the bank.

Rub 'n Buff is ideal for restoring cherished antiques, stenciling, frame finishing, antiquing, home decor, restoration and craft projects. I have tried unsuccessfully so far to make RubnBuff stick to metal items…it seems to stick for a minute but then once you buff it buffs right off…Ive tried leaving for a few days and reapplying and it just goes thick and claggy and once again rubs off.

Rub ‘n Buff — I purchased this set of five different golds that I’ve tested for you in this post (you can also find them sold individually here). I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve used this stuff, but let’s just say any time you need to paint something metallic and actually make it look like real gold, silver, or copper, Rub n Buff is the most convincing one out of any finish you could use. I have been told by the manufacturer that you can create your own range of colors by mixing the colors together to get the shade you like. In my case, I’m redoing my guest bedroom and wanted to change out some of the black and bronze colors to a beautiful, antique gold.I have been using antique gold but it is much darker than I want to use on restoring an old chandelier, this blog has enabled me to choose the correct gold for this project, thanks for the info much appreciated! The smooth painted wood was by far the easiest to do and looked best when done, the raw wood absorbed it and required more product per coat, and on the plastic I thought it might not stick but once it dried it adhered well. Prep includes scuffing up the surface with fine steel wool or a sanding block, then using a good oil based spray primer.
