I love the brocade immortal story because we get villain Ling Wen and get to see a differing side of her and her story. That leads us to the arc in which He Xuan after successfully infiltrating as a heavenly official for years success in luring both brothers to his domain. Watching your beloved be trampled and ridiculed with your own eyes and being unable to do a thing about it. Shi Qingxuan’s extroverted personality mixed with He Xuan’s introverted (and secretly murderous) personality was everything I could’ve asked for.

This novel was just Xie Lian freaking the fuck out whenever he sees Hua Cheng (especially when he's shirtless), or mooning over Hua Cheng, or missing Hua Cheng, or being jealous over Hua Cheng's beloved, or making out with Hua Cheng making sure Hua Cheng gets air to breathe(even when he's a ghost and doesn't need to breathe bcs Xie Lian's a dumbass who's clearly in love) AND I DEVOURED EVERY SECOND OF IT. I was just so happy to see what I thought were girlfriends and then later on what I thought were boyfriends. Sure, Shi Qingxuan wouldn’t have ascended, but their life wouldn’t have been all that terrible as stated in the book.I love a bit of BL but I have never read a story that manages to be on ASOIAF level of character and world building. This epic historical fantasy about a prince and the mysterious man by his side is now in English, for the very first time.

And being completely honest, there's not much of their relationship actually in the book (unless you're truly desperate, which I guess we are, lol). And I don't like the timing of Mount Tonglu opening again for another trial for the ghosts to combat each other and eventually choose a new supreme. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Born the crown prince of a prosperous kingdom, Xie Lian was renowned for his beauty, strength, and purity. And the way Xie Lian constantly reassures Hua Cheng and tries to protect him at all costs, even when he knows the latter can do so himself- he's the Ghost King ffs. And also even though SQX was angry with his brother he still loved him and wanted to help him with his tribulation even after finding out the truth. Shi Qingxuan truly grew on me since the moment he appeared on the scene and especially when declaring Xie Lian his friend despite just meeting him.

I don't want to end this review on such a depressing note since despite tragic events this vol was actually really funny, so how about a badass Xie Lian moment. That just hurts because he has suffered and been alone for 800+ years and hasn’t even felt the simple emotion of true happiness. Now only a lowly scrap collector, he is dispatched to wander the earthly realm to take on tasks appointed by the heavens to pay back debts and maintain his divinity. We get so many kisses including the altar kiss when Hua Cheng is affected by Mount Tonglu and also the coffin scene when they are in Black Waters lair.It really pissed me off that he all of a sudden turned on Shi Qingxuan and started to choke them and say that they can’t live without him anyway so they may as well die with him. This arc is focused on the past shared between Shi Qingxuan, his brother Shi Wudu, and He Xuan the supreme ghost Black Water Sinking Ships.

And then when you think about how Shi Wudu dies and no longer has to live with the consequences but the other two do. I just love how close they are getting but my favorite thing is how we get Xie Lian confessing that he has feelings for Hua Cheng to himself.Caught up in the struggle, Xie Lian's hand accidentally skimmed past the cinnabar dish stationed on the table, smearing crimson marks across the paper underneath him. And it just makes me so sad when you realize how much he’s suffered even in something as small as this that he doesn’t know what the touch of someone who doesn’t want to hurt or use him feels like. but the moment he opened his eyes, he found himself staring squarely into Hua Cheng's own widened ones. We continue novel four still in the web novel version of book three and we continue where we left off which is getting into the Black Water Demon arc. Volume 5 won't be out until later this month, and I don't know when I'll be able to get a copy of it from any of the library systems I have access to.
