The women gave up their thoughts of a home life and possible careers to live on the farms, fields and cities of Italy. Elsewhere, there's a snug family room and dining space, an impressive entry foyer with a vaulted ceiling, as well as four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Although it’s a well-known story, it has rarely – outside Italy – been told from the viewpoint of the women involved. This is an old rural house situated in a pretty small village sheltered in the north hills of the Stara Planina Mountain. The custom-built home is located in the heart of Mount Macedon in Victoria, Australia, and was constructed from Canadian cedar, allowing it to seamlessly blend in with its surroundings. The Via Ferrata — Italian for “iron path” — is fitted with steel ladders, rungs and cables built into the mountain for ramblers to use to navigate difficult sections. Right in the center of the Rocky Mountains lies Granby, and it’s a scenic wonderland of mountain activities.

Her recent books - a quartet focussed on resistance to dictatorship, particularly in Italy - were shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize, the Orwell Prize and the Costa Biography Award. Unfortunately, just as the fighters felt they could enjoy their success and rebuild Italy, they realised they were completely dependant on Allied goodwill for funding and support.

For its “data-rich” narrative and two-thirds of a well-written book, A House in the Mountains deserves four stars. Looking to extend the idea of the ‘Landscape House,’ this 2,850 SF guest house in the Rocky Mountains integrates into and accentuates its mountain environment. He was a fairly unemotional reader who's voice droned a little when reading the frequent lists of dates, events, and people.
