It has proved to be quite an excursion in its own right, spawning some nightmares while exhuming our memories of the dead. The author seems to have relaxed and found a style, there are less overused stylistic phrases (message:received, house alive with death, the woman, the man etc), the wordiness has been toned down, and there is less hopping about in terms of timeline. I was just two months old when my parents bought our first home in Willimantic, Connecticut, where all my sisters came into the world. So often such books concentrate on the phenomena, not what it meant to the people to whom it happened. Overwritten, flowery (but wilted) prose that frightens the reader with its monotonous voice that threatens to never end.

Time suddenly became irrelevant; fractured by spirits making their presence known then dispersing into the ether. It was the basis of the horror movie The Conjuring, and frankly that plot seems to have been only loosely based on what happened. If it was cut back to a few chapters on topic and developed a story line with progression it would have been much better.I hope it changes but MAN the author makes her own dad out to be a total dick in this book, there is NOTHING sympathetic about him.

I suppose they think so because they are indications that ghosts or spirits exist, when they have been told they can't.I find it disorienting that while the book is generally chronological- it starts with why they needed to move, and the effort it took, and only just touched on the Warrens, so far- (I think they're in the second book). It took some time for the seven mortals involved, decades to realize, ultimately, they were glad to meet them.
